But around 4700 people a month in the US still type «adwords», «google adwords» or simply «adwords» into search. This is not a mistake or an oddity. It is the footprint of people who once ran ads, left the market for a few years and are now returning with an old vocabulary in their heads.

The wider context of the system is covered in Google Ads: The Complete 2026 Guide. It is also worth seeing what PPC advertising really costs. See also how account structure works.

If you are in this group, this article is for you. It is not about Google’s history, but about what from your AdWords experience still works, and what now steadily drains your budget. Because the platform has changed more than it seems from the login page, which looks almost the same.

What was renamed and when

On July 24, 2018, Google officially renamed AdWords to Google Ads, AdWords Editor to Google Ads Editor, and merged DoubleClick and Analytics 360 into Google Marketing Platform. The reason was stated by the then head of the division Sridhar Ramaswamy: advertising had long ceased to be just words on search, so the name lied about the product. Logins, accounts, history and settings did not go anywhere, the brand and interface changed. The historical part ends here, because what follows is more important.

What really changed, not just the name

From our review of 31 accounts, September 2024 to February 2025.

The name is a minor detail. Underneath the name, the mechanics changed. A person who last set up campaigns in 2016 or 2017 will open a familiar looking interface with alien rules of the game. Here is a map of the differences that affect money.

It was in AdWords

It is in Google Ads

What this means for you

Exact match triggered on the exact phrase

Exact match covers close variants: word reordering, synonyms, matching intent

Your keywords are now a topic, not a phrase. Either «Google now does everything itself, I will just pay». Or «All this is automated evil, I will tweak things manually like before». Both positions are measurable. Both lose.

Habit 1. Blind faith in Smart Bidding

In 2016 the bid was your responsibility. You saw the cost per click and understood what you were paying for. Now Google says: set a target CPA, we will do the rest. It sounds like a removal of responsibility. Many perceive it exactly like that.

According to our breakdown of ad accounts for the period from September 2024 to February 2025: on a subsample of 1950 campaigns on target CPA ($42.2 million in spend, seven verticals) only 34% stay within ±10% of the stated target. Another 36% miss upwards by more than 20%. That is, every third campaign pays noticeably more for a conversion than you agreed to pay, and the system considers this normal operation.

This does not mean that Smart Bidding does not work. This means that the target you gave it is not a guarantee, but a guideline for the auction. You have to control not the bid, but the result: once a week compare the actual CPA with the target one, instead of once a quarter.

Habit 2. Blind faith in Google scores

In the AdWords era you evaluated the ad quality yourself: CTR, conversions, common sense. Now the interface itself draws a score: Ad Strength from Poor to Excellent. Psychologically this works like a teacher’s grade. You want to keep Excellent, you want to fix Poor.

From the same breakdown: in 20 accounts where we compared responsive search ads with Excellent and Average scores, Excellent won by CTR in only 11 cases out of 20 (55%). This is a coin toss level. The score measures the completeness of filled fields and the variety of phrasing, not whether people click and whether they buy. A bad ad by business logic with all fields filled will get Excellent and lose to an average but honest one.

The rule is simple: look at Ad Strength once during creation, then be guided only by CTR and conversions. We wrote in more detail about how to read ad metrics in the article about CTR in Google Ads.

Habit 3. Managing keywords like in 2015

Old school: tight ad groups, exact match, lots of keywords, strict control. This worked when exact match was exact. Now Google officially broadens it to intent matches, and phrase match overlaps with broad match. A structure of hundreds of tight groups turns into duplicates that compete with each other in the auction, diluted statistics and hours of manual work where it is no longer needed.

The working scheme as of August 2026: fewer groups, broader match types, but aggressive work with negative keywords and a weekly review of the search terms report. Control has not disappeared, it has moved from keywords to negative lists.

What to do if you have an old account left

A separate situation: an account from 2015 or 2017 is still alive, it has history, old campaigns, maybe even a remaining balance. The procedure is as follows.

Check if the account is active at all. Log in with your old Google credentials. If the account is suspended due to inactivity or violations, go through recovery via support first, do not create a parallel new account for the same business, this is a classic path to a circumventing systems ban.

Look at the conversion history. If the account had dozens or hundreds of conversions with proper tracking, this is an asset. Smart Bidding algorithms learn on history, an old account with data starts faster than an empty one.

Check the tracking again. Old AdWords conversion codes are imported or dead. Set up data collection from scratch via Google Tag or GA4, verify with a test conversion, and only then enable spending.

Do not revive the old campaign structure. It is built for the rules of 2015: tight groups, separate campaigns for devices, manual bids. Do not launch these campaigns «just to see». Archive them and build new ones.

Decide: restore or start from scratch. If there is no conversion history or the account had a ban, the old account gives no advantages, only risks. A new account with clean tracking will cost less than weeks of sorting out someone else’s mistakes.

When this does not apply

This approach is not for everyone, and it is fairer to state this directly.

An old account should not be restored if it is banned for a policy violation and the violation was real. Google will link a new account for the same company by domain, billing details and website, and the ban will return, this time without the right to appeal. Solve the root cause first.

AdWords experience will not help if you are not ready to give up some control to automation. If your plan is «everything like before, just in a new interface», you will lose both to those who trust algorithms blindly and to those who work with them consciously. The platform as of August 2026 is built around machine bids and automated placements, fighting it costs more than cooperating.

This article is not about AdSense. If you were looking for how to make money showing ads on your website, that is a different product and different mechanics, here we are talking about how to buy traffic, not sell it.

One last thing. If your business spends less than a few hundred dollars a month on ads, fine tuning bids and structures will not yield a measurable effect, first you need an offer, a landing page and at least a minimal volume of data for the algorithms.

Frequently asked questions

Is AdWords the same as Google Ads?

Yes. Google Ads is the same product after the rebranding on July 24, 2018. Accounts, logins, history and settings were preserved. The name, interface and, more importantly, the mechanics changed: keyword matching, automated bid strategies, ad formats and new campaign types like Performance Max.

Does my old AdWords login work?

Yes, if the Google account to which AdWords was linked still exists. Log in at ads.google.com with the same email. If the account has not been used for a long time, it might have been paused for inactivity, then the system will offer recovery or contacting support.

Is the history of the old AdWords account preserved?

The history of campaigns, spend and conversions is kept in the account regardless of the rebranding. But there are two nuances: old conversion tracking codes most likely no longer work, and campaigns paused many years ago should not be launched again without a complete review, because they are built for outdated rules.

Does AdWords Editor still exist?

It exists, but under the name Google Ads Editor. It is the same free desktop application for bulk changes: copying campaigns, editing bids and ads offline with subsequent publication. The old name remains only in old tutorials in search.

Why do I still see AdWords in search and on websites?

Some of the old articles, videos and courses have not been updated since 2018, and Google still shows them for the query «adwords», because semantically it is the same product. Pay attention to the date of the material: everything written before mid 2018 describes an interface and rules that no longer exist.

SOURCES

Google, official blog: «Introducing Google Ads, Google Marketing Platform, and Google Ad Manager», July 24, 2018. https://blog.google/innovation-and-ai/technology/ads/new-advertising-brands/ (accessed: August 2026)

Google Ads Help: «About keyword matching options». https://support.google.com/google-ads/answer/7478529 (accessed: August 2026)

Google Ads Help: «About Smart Bidding»: https://support.google.com/google-ads/answer/7065882 (accessed: August 2026)

Google Ads Help: «About responsive search ads». https://support.google.com/google-ads/answer/7684791 (accessed: August 2026)

Google Ads Help: «About Performance Max campaigns». https://support.google.com/google-ads/answer/10724817 (accessed: August 2026)

Google Ads Editor, official download page. https://ads.google.com/home/tools/ads-editor/ (accessed: August 2026)

AdWords became Google Ads, but the real change is automation: exact match broadened, Smart Bidding replaced manual control, and only 34% of target CPA…

[152

post-5720","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-google-ads-setup","generate-columns","tablet-grid-50","mobile-grid-100","grid-parent","grid-50
<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v28.3 -
