Exclude irrelevant demand, tighten uncontrolled matching, and leave relevant searches alone when the evidence is not yet conclusive.

You choose the keywords in Google Ads, but your ad dollars are spent after a real person searches. The words that person used reveal what you actually paid to reach: someone ready to hire you, someone looking for a free guide, a job seeker, or a customer for a different service.

The search terms report puts those real searches next to their cost and results. Start with terms that spent money without recording a conversion. Read the intent behind each phrase, then decide whether to add a negative keyword, tighten the matching that admitted it, or leave it alone while you gather better evidence.

Search term versus keyword: what is the difference?

A keyword is an instruction supplied by the advertiser. A search term is what the user actually typed. A sensible keyword can trigger many searches with very different commercial intentions.

The gap is widest with broad match. Google can connect a query to your keyword through meaning and context rather than literal wording. That creates reach, but it also allows a normal keyword to collect irrelevant demand. Google’s guide to keyword matching options explains which contextual signals broad match may use.

The useful distinction. Do not judge a keyword by how tidy it looks in the account. Judge the searches it attracted and what those visitors did after the click.

Where to find the search terms report

In Google Ads, open “Campaigns,” then choose “Insights and reports” and “Search terms.” This is the current route documented in the official search terms report help page.

Choose the date range. Cost and conversion data should cover the normal lead cycle for your business.

Set the columns. Select “Columns,” keep “Cost,” “Conversions,” “Conversion value,” and “Match type.” Under “Attributes,” check “Keyword,” then select “Apply.”

Sort the spend. Select the “Cost” heading so the searches that spent the most ad dollars appear first.

Remove rows with a result. Select the filter icon, choose “Conversions,” set the condition to “equals” and the value to zero, then select “Apply.” Read the visible rows from the top and give each one a single outcome: negative keyword, matching review, or no change.

The keyword table reports on choices you made. The search terms table reports on language customers used. If you own the business and want to understand wasted spend, the second view is the one that exposes intent.

Which columns should a business owner review?

You do not need every metric in the interface. Read from money to outcome, then from the customer’s intent back to the account setting that allowed the impression.

Column

Business question

What the signal means

Next move

Cost

Which searches have already spent meaningful dollars?

Higher spend makes a term more urgent to inspect

Review its result and intent

Conversions and value

Did the search produce a useful action or revenue?

Cost without a result deserves investigation, not an automatic ban

Check lead quality and sales records

Search term

What was the person trying to accomplish?

Language about jobs, training, free help, or another service can change the commercial intent

Decide whether that demand belongs in the campaign

Keyword

Which of your settings admitted this search?

Repeated waste from the same keyword suggests a systematic matching problem

Review match type and ad group structure

Match type

How loosely did the query relate to the keyword?

Broader matching explains reach, but does not make irrelevant traffic acceptable

Keep controlled reach or tighten it

A term with no recorded conversion is not automatically waste. It may describe your service perfectly but lead to a weak page. A phone call may be missing from tracking. The sale may happen later. Sorting by cost finds where to look; interpreting intent tells you what to change.

Take the keyword “air conditioner repair.” “Air conditioner repair technician jobs” signals a job seeker, “DIY air conditioner repair” signals a self-service need, and “air conditioner repair near me” may be qualified demand. The first searches create negative keyword candidates. The last should not be blocked merely because it has not recorded a conversion yet, even if the Cost column already shows dollars spent.

In my agency practice, search term analysis is the first step in every audit of a Search account. It separates an acquisition problem from failures later in the journey, such as the offer, landing page, lead handling, or measurement. Use the diagnosis for clicks without leads to test those other branches.

How often should you review search terms?

After a launch, open the report as soon as the first useful evidence arrives and review it again with each new lead cycle until the same unwanted intentions stop returning. Reopen it after a match type change, a material budget increase, a new location, landing page, or offer.

New evidence matters more than a date on the calendar. A small service campaign gains little from rechecking a table with no meaningful new traffic. An active campaign can let the same unwanted intent consume budget repeatedly if nobody reviews it.

Why are some searches hidden?

Google does not disclose every individual search. Terms without enough query activity are omitted to meet privacy standards. The interface groups their contribution under “Other search terms.” In the download, the Search term cell for that row is blank because Google exports the aggregate metrics but withholds the underlying query text.

This is why visible rows may not account for all spend. Do not invent an explanation for the hidden portion. Analyze what is disclosed and treat the remainder as a limit on precision. Google does not publish a universal hidden share, so the relevant gap can only be assessed inside your own account.

What should you do with an irrelevant search term?

Name the unwanted intent before you block a phrase. A search about training is waste for a company that only delivers the service, but valuable for a school. The same words can have different economics in different businesses.

What you find

Decision

Reason

The search is unrelated to your service or clearly carries the wrong intent

Add a negative keyword with a carefully chosen match type

The unwanted impression is excluded without entering that auction

Normal keywords repeatedly attract the wrong kind of search

Review match type, ad group structure, and the promise in the ad

A single negative treats one symptom but may leave an uncontrolled source

The search is relevant and produces qualified leads

Do not exclude it, and consider giving it a more controlled home

Useful demand should not be removed because its wording was unexpected

The search is relevant but the evidence is thin

Leave it under observation

An early exclusion can remove future value before you understand the pattern

When clicks arrive without leads, raising bids can feel like action. It does not turn the wrong intent into the right customer. A negative keyword does not raise your auction bid, it removes an unwanted impression. Average CPC in the report can then move either way because the mix of clicks has changed. Do not promise yourself cheaper clicks.

Check negative match behavior before saving a change. Negative keywords behave differently from positive keywords and do not automatically cover every close variant. Singular and plural forms or synonyms may require separate decisions. Google’s negative keyword documentation explains the matching rules.

How many negative keywords are normal?

There is no useful target count. A sound list is long enough to exclude demonstrated unwanted intent and cautious enough to preserve real demand. A large list does not prove good management, and a short list does not prove clean traffic.

Every restriction should have a traceable reason: a real search or a recurring pattern found in your own data. A generic list from another advertiser reflects their services, margins, and acceptable customer journey. It should not be attached to your campaigns without a term-by-term review.

When this does not apply

Search term cleaning cannot support a reliable conclusion when traffic is still too sparse. It also cannot identify spend without leads when conversion tracking is missing, duplicated, or disconnected from lead quality. Repair measurement before judging intent.

If an agency manages the account and you never open it, the report still works as an owner control. Ask the agency to show the highest spend terms without results and explain its decision for each kind of intent. “The algorithm handles it” is not a substitute for that link between query, cost, and customer outcome.

If sorting spend and reading intent still leaves you unsure whether the problem sits in the queries, measurement, or the page, the webinar walks through that fork across the lead journey. You can also request the same diagnosis for your own account in an audit.

Two steps follow from here: n-gram analysis of search terms cleans them by word rather than one by one, and shared negative keyword lists keep those decisions alive beyond a single campaign.

Questions business owners ask

Should every search term without a conversion become a negative?

No. Confirm the intent, spend, tracking quality, and eventual lead outcome. Exclude a term only when you can explain which unwanted demand it represents.

Will exact match solve irrelevant traffic?

Not by itself. Tighter matching may reduce waste and remove useful searches at the same time. Choose among a negative keyword, a match type change, and a structural change after you identify the recurring intent.

Why is visible search term cost lower than total cost?

Google withholds some individual queries for privacy reasons. Their contribution can remain in aggregated reporting without revealing the specific phrase.

What should I ask my agency to show me?

Ask for a meaningful date range, sort the terms by cost, review conversions, and require a clear explanation of which intentions were excluded, which were retained, and why.

The Google Ads search terms report reveals which customer intentions spend your budget without producing leads.

[131

post-7160","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-keywords-audiences","generate-columns","tablet-grid-50","mobile-grid-100","grid-parent","grid-50
<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v28.4 -
