Start with three business-specific lists and populate them from your own search terms, not a generic download.

A Google Ads negative keyword list is a shared campaign-level library of exclusions that you can apply to multiple campaigns. Edit the shared list once, and the change immediately affects every campaign connected to it.

For a service business, I recommend starting with three lists: universal waste, wrong intent, and competitors or brands. Build them from your own Google Ads search terms report, not from a generic list found online.

What a negative keyword list is

A negative keyword prevents ads from serving for unwanted search intent. A campaign-level negative keyword list turns exclusions shared by several campaigns into a reusable library. You create the library once and connect it to every campaign that needs the same rule. Google Ads also has a separate global account-level list that automatically applies to eligible Search and Shopping inventory instead of selected campaigns.

This is useful when related service campaigns repeatedly attract the same irrelevant demand. Instead of maintaining duplicate exclusions inside each campaign, you update the shared library. Google explains this behavior in its negative keyword list documentation.

The list does not decide whether a word is good or bad for your company. It scales a decision you have already made. A mistaken shared exclusion therefore reaches every connected campaign, which makes review more important than the convenience of centralization.

Lists versus campaign-level negative keywords

Use a list for a rule shared by multiple campaigns. Keep a negative keyword inside a campaign when it is specific to that service, location, or offer. Both levels work at the same time. Connecting a shared list does not remove or replace campaign-level negatives.

Level

What belongs there

When to use it

Shared campaign-level list

Intent that is unwanted across several campaigns

The same rule should cover the selected group of campaigns

Campaign negatives

Exceptions tied to one service or offer

A term is harmful here but may be valuable elsewhere

Review queue

Words with mixed or uncertain meaning

Full searches and outcomes need inspection before exclusion

Use a simple test. If you would not confidently apply an exclusion to every campaign connected to the library, it does not belong in that list yet. Keep it local or make the negative phrase more specific.

How many lists a service business needs

In my agency work, three clear lists are a better starting point than dozens of narrow libraries. The items below are not a finished upload. They are candidates I start with, then verify against the real queries in that account.

Universal waste. Jobs, careers, salary, resume, free, DIY, instructions, download, course, training. Check every word first: universal means common to your own business, not to every advertiser.

Wrong intent. Wholesale, rental, used, parts, materials, equipment, template, forum, reviews, photos. These often signal a different task, but none becomes a negative until you read the full search.

Competitors or brands. Main competitor name, alternate spelling, abbreviation, former brand, manufacturer brand, marketplace, classifieds site, contractor directory, comparison service, and a product brand you do not service. Fill these slots with names from your report and apply the list selectively.

This is a practical starting structure, not a Google Ads requirement. Create another library only when a group of negatives needs a different campaign scope or management rule. If the reason and campaign coverage remain the same, the existing list is enough.

How to assign lists to campaigns

Open the campaign list and ask one question for each campaign: “Could this rule remove useful demand here?” Connect only the libraries for which the answer is clearly no.

State the business reason. Define the unwanted intent rather than labeling a collection of words as bad.

Select the campaigns. Check whether any service in that group could profit from the intent you plan to exclude.

Read the complete searches. Never judge an ambiguous candidate without its phrase, campaign, and outcome context.

Connect the list. In Google Ads, open “Tools,” then “Shared library,” “Exclusion lists,” and the “Negative keyword lists” tab. Select the list, choose “Apply to campaigns,” select the campaigns, and choose “Done.” Existing campaign negatives continue to work.

Review the impact. Confirm that irrelevant traffic declined without removing useful search intent.

If the same phrase is irrelevant to one service but valuable to another, do not force both campaigns under the same list for the sake of a tidy account. A campaign-level negative is safer and more precise.

Why generic lists from the internet are risky

In my experience, a generic negative keyword list hides more risk than it removes. It was created for someone else’s economics, services, and definition of irrelevant demand. A word that loses money for another company may describe your ideal customer.

A simple example: “free” is waste for a contractor who sells only paid repairs, but it can be live demand for a school offering a free introductory class. The same candidate cannot be copied blindly between those accounts.

The safer method is to build from real traffic in your own account. Google’s help page for the search terms report explains which searches the report associates with your ads. For every candidate, inspect the complete search, campaign, outcome, and fit with your service.

You can treat a downloaded list as a set of hypotheses for manual review. Do not apply it as a finished solution. Every term must prove that it is irrelevant to your offer before it becomes a shared exclusion.

How to update lists without blocking qualified traffic

Start each update in the search terms report. Review the libraries after a campaign launch, a match type change, or a material budget increase, then with each new lead cycle that produces new search wording. Move a word or phrase into the shared list only after reading the full search.

Choose the negative match type before adding the term. An exclusion that is too broad can remove qualified searches, while one that is too narrow may let unwanted variations through. Review Google’s negative keyword documentation before making that choice.

Keep the reason for each candidate and examples of the complete searches beside it. When meaning changes with context, prefer a more specific phrase or a campaign-level exclusion. After editing a shared list, inspect all connected campaigns because the change reaches them immediately.

When this does not apply

Shared libraries add little value when there are few campaigns, their search intent barely overlaps, or each service requires its own exclusions. Campaign-level negatives are clearer in that account structure.

A list also cannot repair faulty conversion measurement or tell you which search intent is profitable. If lead quality is invisible, a shared exclusion merely distributes an untested assumption across several campaigns. Fix the outcome signal before centralizing decisions.

If the account already has scattered campaign negatives and you cannot tell what belongs in a shared list, the webinar follows the decision from a full query to its proper home: one campaign or several.

Negative keyword list questions

Does a list replace campaign-level negatives?

No. Shared lists and local exclusions operate together. Use a shared campaign-level list for common rules and keep service-specific exceptions inside the relevant campaign.

What should I do with an ambiguous word?

Read the complete searches containing it and check their intent and outcomes. If some searches are valuable, do not put the word in a shared library. Narrow the exclusion to a phrase or keep it within the relevant campaign.

Do I need to copy a shared list into every campaign?

No. Create the shared list once and connect it to the campaigns that need it. Future edits to the list immediately affect every connected campaign.

Build practical Google Ads negative keyword lists, apply them to the right campaigns, and protect search terms that generate qualified leads.

[131

post-7178","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-keywords-audiences","generate-columns","tablet-grid-50","mobile-grid-100","grid-parent","grid-50
<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v28.4 -
