Keep click-based actions separate so automated bidding does not optimize toward inflated lead counts.

You can identify the campaign behind a phone call when the call passes through a Google forwarding number. Google displays its number instead of the business number, routes the call to your regular line, and retains the connection between the call and the ad campaign.

That mechanism is available in markets including the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Germany, Spain, Italy, Poland, Australia, and Israel. Once call reporting is enabled, the useful answer goes beyond “this campaign generated calls.” You can inspect call duration and status, then distinguish answered calls from calls your team missed.

Why a call click is not the same as a call

Google Ads offers several phone-related actions, but they do not all observe the same thing. A click on a phone number happens in the browser. An actual call happens on the phone network and has a start time, a duration, and an answered or missed status.

Mobile website phone number tracking counts the click itself. Google explicitly notes that it does not track the calls in that setup. The “clicks on call ads and assets” conversion is different, but still not a direct record of a conversation. Google estimates whether a meaningful call took place.

Reported action

What it establishes

How to interpret it

Click on a phone number on a mobile site

The visitor tapped the number

Intent to call, not a confirmed lead

Click on a call ad or asset

Google estimates whether a meaningful call occurred

An estimated signal

Call through a Google forwarding number

The call used a measurable route

An actual call with call details

Google documents five ways to track phone call conversions. Calls from ads, calls to a number on your website, and imported calls require Google forwarding numbers. Clicks on a number on a mobile website and clicks on call ads or assets do not. The distinctions are laid out in Google’s phone call conversion tracking guide.

What the Call details report actually shows

With call reporting active, the Call details report can show the start time, duration, caller country code, area code, call status, call source, and call type. Campaign, Ad group, and Search keyword are also available fields. Search keyword identifies the advertising keyword, not the exact query a person typed. Remove the Ad group column when reviewing Performance Max calls; selecting it hides those calls. A recording can appear when recording is enabled. For most calls longer than 15 seconds, the caller’s phone number is available as well, except in India and Japan.

Cost per call is not a column in this report. A click on the call button is charged like a click on the ad headline under the normal CPC model. If someone manually dials the forwarding number, Google does not charge for that dial. You can verify the complete field list in the Call details report documentation.

The missed status deserves special attention. It shows a call that reached the business but was not answered. It does not establish that the caller was a qualified lead. In a service business, an unanswered call can still be a more useful operational finding than a small campaign adjustment. More traffic does not repair an unanswered phone.

How to turn on reporting without corrupting your lead count

Open the account settings and look for the call reporting section. If it is absent, the account country or account type does not support Google forwarding numbers.

Enable call reporting for the account and save the setting. The change can take up to a day to reach live ads.

Go to Goals, then Conversions, and open the Calls from ads conversion action. For duration-based measurement, set the minimum call length that qualifies as a conversion for your business. Shorter calls remain visible in the report but do not meet that threshold. See Google’s calls from ads setup instructions if you need to create the action.

Review campaign, duration, and status together. For Search campaigns, inspect the keyword and ad group too; omit Ad group when reviewing Performance Max. The total call count alone cannot tell you how calls were handled.

Keep click-based actions separate from confirmed calls. Otherwise the Conversions column can combine actions that represent different levels of intent.

Do not switch call reporting off casually. Calls from ads will stop counting as conversions, removing those learning signals from automated bidding.

Call reporting works in Search and covers call assets, location assets, and Performance Max ads that include a phone number. A website is not required for a call placed directly from an ad. Tracking calls to the number displayed on a website is a separate setup that also relies on a Google forwarding number.

How to use campaign attribution in a business decision

Start with a question the report can answer. If one campaign produces long, answered calls associated with relevant advertising keywords while another produces short or missed calls, you have a useful operational distinction. The report does not tell you revenue and does not contain a cost per call field, so connect its call records with your sales or CRM outcome before declaring a winner.

Then look at the handoff. Campaign attribution helps you decide where a caller came from. Call status helps you see whether anyone answered. Your own business records must tell you whether the conversation became a qualified enquiry or a sale. These are related questions, not interchangeable metrics.

If you are reviewing the account with an agency or freelancer, use the broader clicks but no leads diagnostic to review the whole journey from click to enquiry. Call tracking is one part of that audit, alongside the path from ad click to a handled enquiry.

When this does not apply

Native call reporting cannot provide call-level detail when the call reporting section is missing from the account. It also cannot turn a mobile phone number click into proof of a conversation. If your reporting uses only click-based actions, label them accordingly and avoid presenting them as completed calls.

A Google forwarding number is not a permanent business number. Google owns it, may change or reassign it, and allows its use only for call reporting and website call conversion tracking. Supported markets can also change without an announcement, so check the current Google forwarding number list before relying on the setup.

Questions business owners ask

Can I see the caller’s number?

For most calls longer than 15 seconds, yes, except in India and Japan. The report can also show the caller’s country code and area code.

Does tracking work for someone using a desktop?

A person can manually dial the displayed forwarding number. Google does not charge for the manual dial, and the number routes the call to the business line.

Do calls feed automated bidding?

Calls from ads can count as conversions when they meet the duration threshold you set. Turning call reporting off stops those conversions and removes their data from automated bidding.

Call reporting now has a clear role in the wider account review: it separates clicks from measured calls and shows which calls went unanswered, while your business records supply the outcome. Continue the audit beyond phone metrics to test whether the rest of the account supports real enquiries.

Next along the same trail: call assets and the closed call-only format cover how to show a phone number at all, call conversions walk through the five ways to count a conversation, and third-party call tracking answers when Google’s own reports stop being enough.

Learn how Google Ads connects calls to campaigns, what the call details report shows, and why a click is not a conversation.

[174

post-7774","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-analytics-conversions","generate-columns","tablet-grid-50","mobile-grid-100","grid-parent","grid-50

Google Ads call tracking: which campaign drove the call?
