Separate tracked calls, estimated conversations, and phone number clicks before using the data to judge performance.

A call can be a conversion in Google Ads, but the conversion name alone does not prove that a customer spoke to your team. One method tracks a call and its duration, another records only a tap on a phone number on a mobile website, and another uses Google’s estimate of whether a meaningful conversation happened.

If your business operates where Google forwarding numbers are available, you can measure actual calls from ads and from your website. You still need to choose the method deliberately. Otherwise, the Conversions column can combine strong evidence with much weaker intent signals.

The five ways to count a call conversion

Google documents five phone call conversion types. The important difference is not where you find them in the interface. It is what event each method can honestly support.

Method

What it actually counts

What it requires

Calls from ads

A call routed through Google that meets your chosen duration threshold

A Google forwarding number

Calls to a number on your website

A call from an ad visitor to the number shown on the site

A Google tag, a separate code snippet, and a forwarding number

Clicks on a number on your mobile website

A tap on the number, without tracking the call itself

A clickable phone number, a Google tag, and an event snippet that handles the click

Clicks on call ads and call assets

Google’s estimate of whether a meaningful conversation occurred

Data available to Google for that estimate

Imported calls

An event selected by the business, such as a call that produced a sale, plus its value

Your own system and a Google forwarding number

Website call tracking needs more than the general tag. Google requires a separate snippet that replaces the phone number for an ad visitor. The separate Phone Analytics metrics group belonged to Universal Analytics. Google retired that feature in March 2024; enabling website call conversions does not create it in Google Analytics 4.

Which call conversion method should you choose?

Start with the business question, not the setup screen. If you need to know whether a call happened, a phone number click is insufficient. Where Google forwarding numbers are available, importing calls gives you more control over the distinction between calls and revenue. You can send only calls that resulted in a sale and include their value. Imported call conversions also require a Google forwarding number.

For conversion tracking based on call duration, the advertiser chooses a threshold. Under this method, a shorter call does not count as a conversion, while its actual duration remains available in call reporting. Do not invent a universal threshold. Choose it for your own operation, and treat it as a duration rule rather than proof that a meaningful conversation occurred.

Where call recording is available and enabled, Google can use artificial intelligence to assess whether the caller is a potential customer, for example by checking whether they ask about a service or book a consultation. If recording is off or unavailable, the system falls back to duration. If duration is unavailable too, it falls back to a click estimate. The same broad label can therefore conceal signals of very different quality.

Why the Conversions column changes

When you turn on call reporting, new calls automatically enter the “Calls from ads” conversion action. Google automatically includes that action in the Conversions column. The metric now has a different composition even if you changed nothing in your campaigns or ads.

Automated bidding can learn from that signal. Turning call reporting off ends measurement based on call duration. Google can then classify conversions using ad interaction data, so automated bidding may receive estimates instead of tracked calls. Before changing the setting, record what the main column contains so you do not compare unlike periods as if the measurement were unchanged.

How to avoid inflating results with phone number clicks

Use the measured event as its name in owner reports. A phone number click is a click. An estimated conversation is an estimate. A tracked call supports only the claim that a call occurred. A business outcome, such as a sale, needs a verified event from your own system.

This naming discipline matters because the mobile website method explicitly does not track calls. Treating every tap as a lead makes the account look healthier without showing whether anyone answered, spoke, or bought.

When this does not apply

Three of the five methods require Google forwarding numbers: calls from ads, calls to the website number, and imported calls. If those numbers are unavailable for your business location, the remaining methods give you a click or an estimate rather than a directly tracked call.

Even in a supported location, website call tracking will not work without access to the site code. Importing calls will not separate inquiries from sales unless your own system stores the outcome you want to send back.

Call conversion questions

Does a phone number click count as a call?

No. It can be configured as a conversion, but Google does not track the call itself for clicks on a phone number on a mobile website.

Do website calls require a tag?

Yes. They require the Google tag and a separate snippet that replaces the number for an ad visitor. Google forwarding numbers must also be available for the business location.

What happens if call reporting is turned off?

Google stops measuring call duration and can use ad interaction data to estimate conversions instead. This changes the signal available to automated bidding; it does not necessarily reduce all call-related conversions to zero.

If this audit shows that clicks and conversations are mixed together, the next useful step is to review every conversion action feeding your reporting and automated bidding.

Learn which Google Ads call conversions confirm a phone call and which record only a click or an estimate.

[174

post-7792","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-analytics-conversions","generate-columns","tablet-grid-50","mobile-grid-100","grid-parent","grid-50
<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v28.4 -
