Judge the new text after the product passes review again, and make the edit where the feed is built.

Rewrite the product title [title] so the detail a shopper types sits at the front, inside 1 to 150 characters. That is what lets the product match a query in Google Shopping. Leave price, a discount, sale dates, shipping, and your company name out of the line. That promotional text breaks the title rules on its own. A clear description is a separate rule, and without it the product can be disapproved.

In a Standard Shopping campaign the ad is built from the Merchant Center feed. Before the click, a person sees the photo, the title, the price, and the store name. Extra text, images, and video are not available yet for this campaign. The title does the job of the keyword the campaign does not have. How the edit fits into a weekly routine is covered in Google Shopping campaign management.

Why the product title decides the impression

A Shopping ad does not take queries from keywords. The help page on Shopping ads says the impression is matched from product data in Merchant Center. The product title [title] matches the product to the shopper’s query, and it is one of the most prominent parts of the ad and of the free listing.

A shopper often types a brand, a product type, and a size in one line, while the feed still holds the marketing name of the model. The help page on the product title [title] asks you to use all 150 characters and to put the most important detail first. Add the brand when it separates this product from other brands. The product feed itself is a separate page.

People usually notice only the first 70 or fewer characters, depending on the screen. The technical cut is 150 characters. A longer line is truncated, Google shows a warning, and the shortened text stays.

Which title rules you cannot break

The title is required for every product. It has to describe the product clearly and name the same product as the landing page. A word-for-word match with the page is not required. Color, size, or age group belongs in the title and in [color], [size], or [age_group]. A detail with no attribute, such as flavor, stays in the title. Most product data has to use the same language as the feed.

Do not write promotional text: price, sale price, sale dates, shipping, a delivery date, other timing, or your company name. Use other attributes, such as sale price or shipping.

Do not use capitals for emphasis. Capitals are fine for abbreviations, phone numbers, countries, and currencies.

Do not use foreign characters as a gimmick. Do not add HTML tags or extra spaces.

Do not use a foreign word people will not understand. An established product name is the exception.

Do not strip color and size. Google’s help page asks for them on a variant. In my experience I do not copy a price or a store name into the title from someone else’s ad.

What to put in the title by product type

Google’s help page does not set a fixed order of brand, then type, then color. Put the most important detail first. If the page lists several kinds of curtains, the title has to tell those variants apart so the shopper can recognize the one they saw.

In my experience I build the line as product type, brand, model, and the key attribute (color, size, or material). That order comes from my experience, not from a Google rule. A slogan such as Elegant Aurora for a dress becomes Dress, brand, Aurora, black, S, cotton.

A few product types need their own word. Do not copy those words onto an ordinary retail product.

Product type

What the title must contain

Any product

Most important detail first. Product name, a specific feature, and the brand if it separates the item. Use all 150 characters.

Variant: color, size, age group

Same difference in the title and in [color], [size], or [age_group]. Google’s example: Google T-Shirt, Red.

A feature with no attribute, such as flavor

Keep the detail in the title. There is no attribute for it.

Software subscription

The word subscription and the duration. Google’s example: Google Chrome (1-year subscription).

A bundle or a multipack

Describe the whole set, not only the main item. For a multipack, you can state how many units are inside.

A single unit of a product otherwise sold only in bulk

Put that unit’s price in the product data. Start the title with the word sample.

A title created with generative AI goes in the structured title [structured_title], not in [title]. Set the digital source type [digital_source_type] to trained_algorithmic_media, and put the text in [content]. The window is the same, 1 to 150 characters. If you send both attributes, Google uses only [title].

How to rewrite the title in your account

Change [title] in the product card in your CMS, or in the file or export the feed is built from. Do not patch only some titles inside Merchant Center.

Keep the line inside 1 to 150 characters. Move to the front the detail the query needs. Add the brand only when it separates the item.

For a variant, repeat color, size, or age group in its attribute. Leave flavor in the title.

Cut price, discounts, dates, shipping, and the company name. Leave color and size.

Match the line to the same product on the page. Do not copy the page heading word for word.

After the update, read the status: Processing for up to 15 minutes, then Approved, or the Needs attention tab. Account linking is covered in Google Merchant Center setup.

Google may rebuild the title to fit a query. In Google’s example the query is King size mattress, the submitted title starts with Memory foam, and the dynamic title moves King to the front. If the line already fits, nothing changes. Turn title customization off, and turn off Google adding page content, images, feed material, and Google AI content to the ad, through your account manager or support. Requests usually take 3-5 business days.

How to tell whether the new title worked

In my experience I do not judge a new title on the day I edit it. The product has to pass review again and show up in the product reports, or you are still looking at the old ad. I compare that product’s impressions and clicks on the Products tab and in the search terms report after 2-4 weeks. That window is not a Google rule. A new title does not guarantee more clicks, impressions, or return on ad spend. Unwanted queries after the change are handled with negative keywords in Shopping.

A missing [gtin] does not replace a title fix. If the product has a GTIN assigned and you do not submit it, visibility may be limited. The product stays in the account. This is not a disapproval. Use the number the manufacturer assigned. A restricted GTIN range is a separate rule and does not cause this limited visibility. The row leaves Needs attention after some time, not at once. Open Products, then Needs attention, then Edit product, then Save. More is in missing GTIN and limited performance and on the help page about limited visibility.

When this does not apply

A new title does not clear a disapproval when the page and the data show different products or a different price. Other reasons Merchant Center disapproves products sit outside what [title] can fix. On upload day the report still shows the old ad.

The title does not remove limited visibility from a missing [gtin]. The words subscription and sample do not transfer to a product that is neither a software subscription nor a single unit of a bulk item. A common miss: the detail the shopper types first sits at the end, and the model slogan stays at the front.

I put the whole system behind these checks into a short e-book.

Questions and answers

How many characters can a product title have?

From 1 to 150. [content] has the same window. A longer line is truncated, and Google shows a warning. People usually notice the first 70 or fewer characters. The limit stays 150.

Is there a required word order?

No. Put the most important detail first, and add the brand if it separates the product. A subscription, a bundle, and a single unit of a bulk product need their own words.

Can I turn off title rewriting?

Yes. Turn it off through your account manager or support. A request usually takes 3-5 business days. If your line already matches the query, Google leaves it as submitted.

Where does an AI-written title go?

Into [structured_title], with trained_algorithmic_media and the text in [content]. If you also send [title], only [title] is used.

Rewrite the product title in your Google Shopping feed.
