It is a protection that worked, not money lost. Credits for traffic found after the invoice show up in Billing, not in this column.

The «Invalid clicks» column shows how many clicks Google’s automated protections have already filtered out as not representing genuine interest in your business. You are not charged for them. You add the column to your campaigns table: Campaigns menu, then the Columns icon above the table (steps below).

This is not the same as competitors clicking your ads on purpose, which has its own guide: Google Ads click fraud.

What it means

In Google’s help page on invalid traffic, the examples include accidental clicks, clicks from bots and other automated tools, and manual clicks that raise your ad costs or inflate publisher profits.

If Google flags a click as invalid before the end of the billing cycle, it is removed from your campaign metrics and your bill. So the column shows what was filtered, not what was «stolen». If invalid traffic is found after you were invoiced, you get a credit where appropriate and possible. The help calls it a billing adjustment, not a refund.

To find it, go to Summary within the Billing menu, open the «Adjustments» dropdown on the «Month» card and look for «Invalid activity». The same screen holds the Google Ads payment threshold, which decides when you are charged.

That is why a report can show many filtered clicks and billing only small credits: the column covers traffic filtered before billing, credits cover activity found after the cycle closed.

What is at stake

The column is harmless. Misreading it is what costs you.

You read the number as stolen money and chase a refund or buy protection against something already removed from your bill.

You block real customers. Several clicks from one IP address are not necessarily invalid: people return to compare options, and universities, offices and mobile carriers share one address across many users.

You miss the real cause. A click spike or a low conversion rate does not prove invalid traffic. It is often a budget change, new keywords, targeting, a competitor pausing ads or a season.

You expect protection where there is none. The filters work on the ad click, not on what a visitor does on your site, so a fake form submission can arrive even when invalid traffic is low.

What to do

In audits I start with exactly this: the column and the Billing summary. Only then do I talk about click fraud.

Add the column. Go to Campaigns in the Campaigns menu, click the Columns icon above the table, then the Search icon next to «Modify columns for campaigns». Search for «Invalid clicks» and select Apply.

Read the number as a tally of what was filtered. A higher number means the filters removed more, not that you were charged more. Automated checks cover the last 60 days of traffic.

Check billing: Summary within the Billing menu, the «Month» card, «Adjustments», then the «Invalid activity» label.

If the column does not show what you suspect, first rule out ordinary causes: budget, new keywords, location settings, seasonality. Add irrelevant search terms as negative keywords. For clicks from outside your area, change the location option from «Presence or interest» to «Presence».

If the suspicion remains, gather the 10-digit Customer ID, exact dates, campaign and ad group names, suspicious keywords, web server logs (IP addresses, platforms and devices, GCLIDs) and a short reason the traffic looks wrong. Then submit the Click Quality Form. The review covers only the last 60 days and typically takes several business days.

For leads, protect your own side: server-side validation and reCAPTCHA on forms, plus a double opt-in.

What not to do

Do not demand a «refund» for the clicks in the column. You were not charged for them, and anything found later comes back as a credit.

Do not exclude an IP address just because it clicked a few times. Shared addresses and repeat visits look like one visitor clicking again and again.

Do not use a third-party tool’s report to call the column wrong. Such tools can flag duplicate IP addresses or bot activity that Google already filtered out of your bill.

When this does not apply

This guide is not about fake leads: the column counts filtered clicks and cannot see a fake form submission. It does not explain a spike caused by your budget, keywords or season. Old history is out of scope: checks and investigation requests cover only the last 60 days. And your website analytics can disagree with Google Ads, because a visit from a filtered click may still be recorded there.

I put the traffic quality checks I run on every account, together with the rest of my system, into a short e-book.

Questions and answers

Does Google refund invalid clicks?

Not as a refund. Before invoicing, those clicks never reach your bill. If Google finds them later, the help promises a credit where appropriate and possible, without naming amounts or timelines.

Why does the report show many invalid clicks but only small credits?

They measure different things. The column shows traffic filtered out before you were billed. Credits cover what was found after the billing period closed.

Why more conversions than clicks?

In rare cases a click leads to a conversion and Google later marks the click invalid. The click leaves your metrics, but the valid conversion stays.

The Invalid clicks column shows clicks Google already filtered out and did not bill you for.
