It is not a spending limit, and it can rise by itself. You can see it under Billing, Summary.

The payment threshold is the amount of accumulated ad costs at which Google Ads charges you without waiting for the end of the month. It applies when you use the postpay setting. You can see it under Summary in the Billing menu, on the «Next automatic payment» tab.

The ways to pay for ads in general are covered in Google Ads payment methods. This guide is only about the threshold.

What it means

With postpay, Google charges you in two cases: when your account balance reaches the payment threshold, and on the first day of each month. A charge covers current costs for the billing period, taxes and fees if they apply in your country, and unpaid costs from earlier periods. Adjustments and promotional credits are subtracted. One of those adjustments can be a credit for invalid clicks.

Here are the examples from Google’s help page on postpay charges, in US dollars:

Payment threshold

Costs

How you are charged

$50

$49 for August, last payment on August 1

$49 on September 1

$250

$275 for August, last charge on August 1

$250 on the day the balance crosses the threshold, and $25 on September 1

$500

$1,500 in one month

three charges of $500

The threshold is not a spending limit. If your costs exceed it, the extra is added to your balance for the next charge, and the charge on the first of the month can exceed the threshold. It also moves: if you regularly reach it before the next automatic charge, it can rise, for example from $50 to $200 or more. Taxes and fees depend on your country, and paying from abroad has its own guide: pay Google Ads from abroad.

What is at stake

Several charges in one month look like an error. In fact each time your costs reach the threshold, a charge is triggered, and the rest is collected on the first of the month.

A charge can be larger than you expect: it includes unpaid costs from earlier periods, taxes and fees.

A higher threshold means fewer charges, but possibly larger ones. If the system raised it on its own, each single charge grows too.

Even if your costs never reach the threshold, you are billed on the first day of the following month.

What to do

When an owner asks why they were charged twice, I open Summary and the «Next automatic payment» tab and compare them with the bank statement.

Go to Summary within the Billing menu. It shows your current balance, and the «Next automatic payment» tab shows your payment threshold and the next scheduled payment.

Compare that with your bank statement. Each time your costs reached the threshold there is one charge, and the rest comes on the first of the month.

To change the threshold, go to Settings within the Billing menu, open the «How you pay» section and select Edit threshold. It shows the recommended amount.

Select Use recommended amount, then Save. You can also set any other amount up to the recommended value.

If the Edit threshold link does not appear, you cannot change it. The system sets it.

If charges still do not add up, use Google’s guided tool for unidentified charges. For support, prepare a bank statement screenshot (date, amount, currency, last 4 digits of the card), the account if you have several, and your 10-digit Customer ID.

What not to do

Do not read the threshold as a spending cap. In the help’s example, costs of $275 against a $250 threshold mean $250 on the day the balance crosses it and the remaining $25 on September 1.

Do not dispute several charges in a month before checking them against the «Next automatic payment» tab. Several charges a month are normal.

Do not treat the threshold as fixed. If you regularly reach it, the system can raise it. In audits I check the current value and the recommended amount.

When this does not apply

Everything above describes postpay. If your account uses another payment setting, this guide will not explain your charges. If the Edit threshold link is missing, you cannot change the threshold: the system sets it. The dollar amounts are examples from the help page, not norms, and your own threshold is shown in your account. A charge that neither the threshold nor the first of the month explains is a separate case for that guided tool.

I put the billing and budget checks I run on every account, together with the rest of my system, into a short e-book.

Questions and answers

Why was I charged twice in one month?

Your costs reached the payment threshold, which triggered a charge. The remainder is collected on the first of the month. In the help’s example, a $250 threshold and $275 of costs give $250 in August and $25 on September 1.

Can I raise my payment threshold?

Not in every account. If Edit threshold appears, you can choose the recommended amount or a lower one. If it does not, the system sets the threshold.

The Google Ads payment threshold is the point where postpay charges you.
