The alternatives are chain stores or up to 10 of your own places on Maps. Google decides when the asset is eligible to show. A closed place, or No location asset, takes the address off the ad.

For an ad to show an address, a map, or the distance to your shop, the account needs a location asset. For your own places it usually comes from a Business Profile, which is why you link the profile to the account. The alternatives are chain stores you own or up to 10 of your own places on Maps. Owned shops used to be called location extensions. Stores you do not own, where you sell a product, used to be called affiliate location extensions.

The link does not guarantee the address on every impression. After review, the address can show with the ad. On audits I look first at a request that is still waiting, and at a place marked closed. How to build the profile itself is in the article on Google Business Profile setup.

What a location asset is and why you link the profile

The asset tells a person where you work. A click on the address opens the location page. For a shop you own, the help on location assets describes this set: distance and city on a phone, the street address on a computer, a Call button, and a page with hours, the phone number, photos, and directions. The same asset can run in a Performance Max campaign.

On YouTube, a teaser with business information shows alongside the video ad. Which store appears depends on the person’s location or on a place they showed interest in. Video ads start showing the address by themselves unless you turn location assets off.

The data comes from Maps and from the profile. You fix a wrong address or phone on Maps, and the fix flows into the linked accounts. When you build the asset from the profile, Google Ads may use the street address, the phone, the hours, and the merchant photos and videos. You can turn those photos off in Location manager.

The help recommends call reporting. You need to turn it on at account level, or calls from this asset stay out of the report. Phone numbers on the asset are checked so they belong to the business in the ad. How to track calls from ads is covered in a separate article.

One account uses one type of location asset. Your own places come from a Business Profile, chain stores you own, or Maps. If you have no profile and chains do not fit, you can link up to 10 of your own places on Maps. Those places must be yours, or they may be disapproved. Stores you do not own, where you only sell a product, come in as Affiliate locations, and you pick the chains there. The wrong type may be disapproved.

After verification the profile can show on Maps, and the asset in the ad carries the local business name, the address, and the phone. That is how the Business Profile definition describes it. The business name and logo on a Search ad are set separately, as a different feature. It is covered in business name in Google Ads.

How to link a Google Business Profile to Google Ads

The steps below are from the linking page. I use them when this account is not linked to the profile yet.

Go to Assets in the Campaigns menu.

Select the plus button, then Location.

Select Our locations, then Continue.

The domain should appear on its own. If the field is empty, enter the domain to see profiles you can use.

Open Countries with the pencil icon, then select Save.

In the list, find your profile and select Save.

Check the preview. If it is your listing, select Continue.

The request goes to the email tied to that profile. When it is approved, locations from that account are eligible to show as location assets with your ads, once they pass review. The conditions that keep an address off the ad are below. The setup help says syncing can take 24 to 28 hours. That is the wait for the addresses to appear, not the wait for the owner to read the email.

If you already manage the profile, after Our locations choose Link to a Business Profile Manager account I know, then Select a Business Profile that I manage. Pick the account from the dropdown and select Continue. Filter by business name or labels if you need to, then select Save. Do not create a new profile for the same business. Verification already takes time.

If a contractor or another email holds the profile

On audits the link usually stops here. The profile is still tied to a former contractor’s email, or to another email the owner uses. So you ask for access from whoever manages the profile.

Situation

What to do

The profile is on another email

Request access to another Business Profile Manager account and enter that email. The owners have to approve the link inside the profile. You can also enter a domain. The request then goes to the email on the profile that comes up.

A contractor holds the profile

Ask them to add your Google Ads email as an owner or a manager. Accept the invite. Then link the profile with the path for a profile you already manage.

You have several places

The account keeps one asset type. Location groups keep a subset of the addresses. A campaign or an ad group can use No location asset. Campaign settings override the account. Chain store addresses update by themselves. Separately from the first sync, edits made in the Business Profile manager can take up to a day to reach Google Ads.

Why the address does not show

Approval does not guarantee the address on every impression. If the address is missing, check in this order.

The request is still waiting. Open Data Manager, find Google Business Profile under Connected products, and select Manage & link. You will see linked profiles and invitations that are still pending. On audits this is the first place I look.

Less than 24 hours have passed since the link. Syncing can take 24 to 28 hours.

The place is marked temporarily or permanently closed. Then the location asset for that address does not show in the final ad.

A campaign or an ad group is set to No location asset. Campaign settings override account settings. If you manage places mainly at campaign level, remove the broad account-level asset first.

The asset is disapproved. The cause can be the wrong type, with Our locations picked instead of Affiliate locations or the other way around, or a pin you do not own among your 10 on Maps.

The campaign type does not fit. On the Display Network the asset is available only in Local campaigns and in Performance Max with store goals.

The link and ads on Maps

On Maps the asset can sit beside, above, or below search results, including in the Maps app. That is one of the places where the location asset itself can show. What Maps advertising is, and what it costs, is covered in the articles on Google Maps advertising and Maps advertising cost and setup.

A Business Profile is free: you can add your business to Maps at no charge. The help on location assets lists no separate price for the asset itself. You pay for the ads in your campaigns, as usual.

Sterling Sky, on its 2026 page on the state of local SEO, saw ads in the local pack of search results (not in Maps itself) in 1% of mobile reports at the start of 2025 and in almost 22% in December 2025. That is a share of one agency’s own reports, not a click rate. The page does not name the country of the reports, so it is not your benchmark.

I put how the profile and Maps ads work together into a short e-book.

When this does not apply

You sell in stores you do not own, and you picked Our locations. That is the wrong type, and the asset may be disapproved. When you create the asset, Affiliate locations is the option for those stores.

The place is marked temporarily or permanently closed. The location asset for that address does not show in the final ad.

You want the street address on the Display Network in an ordinary campaign. There the asset is limited to Local campaigns and to Performance Max with store goals. Removing every location asset from the account is not advised. You then lose location targeting, location bidding, and store visit measurement. Google turns store visit conversions on by itself when the account meets the requirements.

Questions and answers

Will the address show on every impression?

No. After review the address can show with the ad, but a closed place, No location asset, and a campaign type that does not fit take it off. The full order of checks is in the section Why the address does not show.

A contractor holds the profile. How do I link without a new one?

Ask for owner or manager access on your Google Ads email, accept the invite, and link the profile you now manage. Or send a request to the email on the profile.

How long until the address shows in the account?

Approval of the request depends on the profile owner. After the link, syncing can take 24 to 28 hours. An invitation that is still pending is visible in Data Manager.

How is this different from the business name on the ad?

A location asset carries the place name, the address, and the phone, and it opens the location page. The business name and logo on a Search ad are set separately. They are different items in the account.

Link a Google Business Profile to Google Ads so an ad can show the address or the distance, then check
