Google sometimes flags it with the recommendation «Remove conflicting negative keywords», but not every account sees it. Before you delete a negative keyword, check what it was filtering out, and try narrowing it first.

A «conflicting negative keyword» is a negative keyword that overlaps one of your own keywords, so your ad does not show for it. Google’s help does not describe a separate «conflict» status or report. There are several hints, scattered around the account.

How negative keywords work in general is covered in my guide to negative keywords in Google Ads. Here it is only the case where one hits your own keyword.

What it means

Negative keywords work differently from regular keywords. A keyword can match close variants such as misspellings, reordered words and synonyms. A negative keyword does not catch those variants. Google’s example: the broad negative «house» blocks «red house» but not «blue houses».

A conflict is the same mechanism pointing the wrong way: the negative keyword catches what you want. Say you advertise boiler repair with the keyword «emergency boiler repair». Someone adds the broad negative «repair» to cut searches for phone repair. It hits your keyword too, because «repair» is in the search.

Why it happens

Cause

What it looks like

Where to check

Negative keyword too broad

A word from your keyword was added as a broad match negative

«Audiences, keywords, and content», then «Search keywords» and «Negative search keywords»

List attached to the wrong campaign

A negative from one service line stops a keyword in another

The «Negative Keywords» tab in the campaign and «Exclusion lists» in the «Shared library»

Added from the search terms report

A list built from the report (the «Add to campaigns» box, or a new list) attaches to every campaign with those searches

The same list, plus «Change history»

Wrong level

The negative sits at campaign level but was meant for one ad group

Negatives of the campaign and of each ad group, separately

The shared-list mechanism has its own page in my guide to negative keyword lists.

What to do

Open «Campaigns», then «Recommendations». In the «Keywords and targeting» category, look for the «Remove conflicting negative keywords» recommendation. Google does not show every recommendation type to every account, so its absence proves nothing. If it is there, read which words it wants removed before you apply it.

Cross-check your lists. Put the keywords and the negatives of the campaign, its ad groups and attached lists into one table. For each negative, ask whether all its words appear in the text of one of your keywords. If they do, that keyword is at risk, and the match type decides the rest.

Check the match type of the negative: broad, phrase (in quotation marks) or exact (in square brackets). Google’s help says to pick it so that it does not stop ads for your own keywords. I covered the difference in my guide to keyword match types.

Look at the keyword diagnosis and the search terms report. The diagnosis tests only the exact match version of your keyword, so its negative keyword message is incomplete, as Google’s help on negative keyword problems says. The date a negative was added shows in «Change history».

For each conflict, choose an action from the table below.

If you work in Google Ads Editor, watch its warning before you post changes. Editor’s help treats a keyword identical to a negative keyword in the same ad group as an error.

Situation

What to do

The negative filters out junk but also hits your keyword

Keep it and narrow it: replace the broad match with a more specific phrase or exact one

The negative got there by accident and filtered nothing useful

Remove it

You no longer want the keyword

Pause or remove the keyword, keep the negative

The list is attached to the wrong campaign

Detach the list from the campaign, leave the list itself alone

What not to do

Delete a negative keyword without looking at what it filtered. The junk comes back along with the conflict. Open the search terms report first.

Tick «Add to campaigns» without checking the keywords of every campaign.

Remove several negatives at once. If junk shows up, you will not know which word was protecting your ads.

When this does not apply

Your ads are silent for another reason: the keyword is paused or disapproved, the budget is limited, or the keyword has the «Low search volume» status. Check the «Status» column first.

The reverse problem: a negative exists and ads still show on it. That is not a conflict. Negatives miss close variants and anything after the 16th word of a search, and your report may predate the negative.

The diagnosis reports a block, yet you see impressions and clicks. Then only the exact version is blocked.

If your ads do not come back after these steps, we can go through the account together, and the step-by-step version is in my book on Google Ads for business owners.

Questions and answers

Should I delete every negative keyword Google suggests?

No. The recommendation says they block some of your keywords, but it does not know what junk they hold back. Look at each word on its own.

Does a negative keyword list apply to every campaign?

Only to the campaigns it is attached to. You can see the link on the «Negative Keywords» tab inside the campaign.

A negative keyword can block your own keyword.
