Budget already running, work out what trial and error on that budget costs you. In the accounts I audited, the median advertiser lost 39.4% of tracked search spend to search terms that never produced a lead.

Paying for a Google Ads course makes sense if you already spend money on ads or plan to start soon. Skillshop explains the terms and the interface well, YouTube shows individual techniques, and ChatGPT answers a question in a minute. But all three teach with other people’s examples, and you make the mistakes on your own budget. No ad budget yet? Start with Skillshop. You do not need a paid course right now.

So I frame the question differently. Not «paid or unpaid,» but «whose budget are you learning on?» We asked ChatGPT and Gemini 12 questions people ask before buying a course, and the assistants mention Skillshop in 17 of 24 answers. Below is a table with four owner situations. In five minutes you will find your row.

Short answer: who needs a course and who does not

I have been in advertising for 19 years, and for all of that time I have been explaining it to business owners. One rule has not changed: a course pays for itself not through knowledge, but through the money you stop wasting. If you have no ads and will not for the next few months, there is nothing to waste. So there is nothing to pay back either.

You do not need a course yet if:

you have no ad budget and will not have one in the next few months;

you only want to understand the vocabulary so you can talk to your agency as an equal;

you do not plan to change anything in the account yourself and have no time for it.

A course is worth considering if:

your ads are running and you cannot tell where the budget goes;

you run campaigns yourself and every mistake comes out of your own pocket;

your agency explains results with «that is how the algorithm works,» and you have no way to check.

A course is worth the money only if you apply each lesson in your own account right away and have someone to ask about your situation. You can see how I set this up on the page for my Google Ads course: it says plainly who it is for, who it is not for, and that it cannot guarantee profit.

What Skillshop gives you, and what it does not

Skillshop is Google’s own training platform. According to the Google Ads Help page on Skillshop, once you sign up you get a library of free online courses designed by Google product experts, and you complete them at your own pace. There are learning paths for Search, Display, Measurement, Video and Shopping campaigns, and you can take a certification exam at the end.

For an owner, this is a strong start, and I mean that sincerely. You will learn how a keyword differs from a search term, what a conversion is, and how the auction works. After that, a call with your agency stops feeling like two people speaking different languages.

Here is what Skillshop does not give you. It explains the product: how campaigns work and how to use them the way Google intends. Google says its courses are built around real-world case studies and common business scenarios. But a scenario does not know your cost per lead, your margin, or how much you can afford to pay for one customer. And Skillshop will not look inside your account and tell you which of the system’s suggestions you should turn down.

Here is an example. Your account shows an optimization score from 0 to 100%. Google Help says two things about it. First, 100% means your account can perform at its full potential. Second, your account can reach 100% by applying or dismissing all recommendations. My reading of those two lines: the number shows how you handled the system’s suggestions, not how much you earned. Google also says the Recommendations page does not predict whether your ads will do well. This is where the textbook ends and your own economics begin.

What YouTube and ChatGPT give you

YouTube is great when you need to see it done: where a setting lives, how to add negative keywords, how to connect conversion tracking. The downsides are practical too. The Google Ads interface changes, and the recording date, the creator’s industry and their budget are not always visible. You build the learning order yourself, and you notice the gaps after you have already paid for them.

ChatGPT and Gemini work well as a sparring partner. They will explain a term, draft ad variations, and help you start a negative keyword list. But the assistant cannot see your account. It does not know how much you have spent or on which search terms, so it answers the question you asked, not the one you should have asked. The advice sounds confident even when it does not match what you see in the account. So check every tip against Google Help and your own numbers.

All three share one limit: they teach with other people’s examples. The mistake you learn from will still be made with your money.

What we saw when we asked ChatGPT and Gemini

On October 19, 2026, we asked ChatGPT and Gemini 12 questions people ask before buying a Google Ads course. The questions were not in English: we used the two languages my school teaches in, Ukrainian being one of them. That gave us 24 answers from one run without signing in. This is a snapshot, not a study: a different date or wording can give a different result.

The assistants mention Skillshop in 17 of 24 answers. A mention is not a recommendation: some answers only describe the platform.

The more interesting part came from one question, asked in Ukrainian: is a Google Ads course worth paying for if everything is free on YouTube? Both assistants advised launching a real campaign with a small budget and learning from it. That is honest advice. But it is also learning with your own money. The only question is how much that costs you.

What it costs to learn on your own budget

Here I have a number from practice. In the accounts I audited from 2023 to 2025, the median advertiser spent 39.4% of tracked search spend on search terms that did not produce a single lead. For a quarter of accounts, that share was above 67%.

This is not a market norm. It describes advertisers who came in for an audit. But the size of the numbers shows the main point: the most expensive part of trial and error is not the course. It is the months when your budget goes to search terms that bring no leads.

The formula works only if your account tracks leads. No conversions recorded? Set up tracking first: without it, you know neither your waste nor how much of it you cut. If leads are tracked, work out your own cost of learning in four steps:

Take your monthly Search budget. For example, a plumbing company spending $1,500 a month.

Multiply it by the share of waste. You can calculate your own share from the search terms in your account: divide spend on terms with no leads by your total Search spend. Until you have it, use the median 39.4%. In the example, that is about $591 a month.

Multiply the result by the number of months you plan to learn by trial and error. Over three months, the example comes to about $1,770.

Multiply that by the share of waste you will actually cut. For example, half: about $890 over three months.

Compare the course price with that last number, not with the full waste. A course does not bring waste down to zero. Even an experienced specialist has some search terms that never convert. If the part you cut over those months is larger than the course price, the course pays for itself. If it is smaller, the honest answer is: not yet. I show how to put this on one page for a business partner in my article on Google Ads course ROI.

Now the other side. If your ad budget is zero, your waste is zero too. The formula gives you zero, and that is the honest answer: a course will not pay for itself yet, because there is nothing to save.

Table: your situation → what to choose

Find your row. If you sit between two, start with the upper one: moving from a cheaper option to a more expensive one is always easier than the reverse. Budget already set aside and launch a few weeks away? Count yourself in the third row, using the planned budget: waste starts on the first day your ads run.

Your situation

What to choose

First step this week

No ad budget, launch is months away

Skillshop, YouTube and ChatGPT. No course for now

Complete the Search learning path in Skillshop and work out how much you can pay for one lead

Budget is running, an agency or freelancer manages it

Not a setup course, but the skill to check the work: a short course for owners, or Skillshop for the vocabulary

Make sure the account belongs to your company and you can see clicks, impressions and cost

Budget is running, you manage it yourself

A course where you apply lessons in your own account right away and have someone to ask

Work out your cost of learning on your own budget with the formula above

Online store with a product feed

A course whose syllabus covers Shopping campaigns, Performance Max and feed work. If they are missing, the course is not for your store

A note on the second row. If an agency runs your ads, you do not need to know how to build campaigns. You need to know how to check them. In its advertiser guide to working with third parties, Google says you have the right to know at least your clicks, impressions and cost, and that an agency must set up a separate Ads account for you. The same guide says that advanced understanding takes time, but the basics do not take long to learn. I explain how training for an owner differs from training for a specialist in my piece on a Google Ads course for business owners.

The third row is the most expensive. You pay for the clicks, you make the mistakes yourself, and you spot them late. A course fits here if your budget is meaningful and you are ready to change something in the account every week. Think of an HVAC company or a dental practice running Search on its own.

How to check a course before you pay

If the table pointed you to a course, check it before paying. I collected the full list of nine criteria in my guide on how to choose a Google Ads course. Here is the short version with five points.

Practice in your own account. Ask which account you practice in and how much time passes between a lesson and an action. Best case, each lesson ends with a specific change in your ads.

Someone to ask. Recorded lessons are everywhere. The difference is whether there is a curator, question and answer sessions, or another way to get an answer about your situation.

Economics before the interface. A good syllabus starts with how much you can pay for a lead, not with a tour of the account menus.

An honest «who this is not for.» A promise of leads or profit is a warning sign: ad results depend on the auction, the market and the website. Even Google says no one can guarantee a specific ad position on its search results.

Reviews you can verify. The date, the industry and what the person actually did in the account matter more than enthusiastic words.

I walk through how to tell a real review from a nice screenshot in my article on how to check Google Ads course reviews.

As an example, here is how these points look in my course, Magic of Google 5.0. It has 9 modules, from clean data for the algorithm to one system across Search, remarketing, YouTube and Performance Max. Students get 1 year of access to the lessons, group question and answer sessions with me, an AI curator and micro homework. The course is built for business owners, marketers and PPC specialists alike. It cannot guarantee profit, and its page says so.

When this does not apply

The «whose budget are you learning on» logic breaks in four cases.

You want a career change. Then you are learning for a job, not for your own budget, and the math is different. What a specialist does and what employers expect is covered in my article on what a PPC specialist does.

Leads are not tracked. The waste formula relies on tracked spend and tracked leads. If your account records no conversions, you do not know your share of waste. Your first step is conversion tracking, not a course. To see what to look at once tracking works, use my Google Ads campaign audit checklist.

The problem is not the ads. If the website does not answer the customer’s questions, nobody picks up the phone, or the price is well above the market, a Google Ads course will not fix it. Ads bring people in. The offer makes the sale.

No time to apply it. A course without action in the account becomes one more library. And you already have a library that costs nothing: Skillshop.

If none of these cases fits and you are still in the third row of the table, the step-by-step version is in my book on Google Ads for business owners.

Questions and answers

Is a Skillshop certification enough to run ads for my own business?

A certification confirms product knowledge. According to Google’s page on Google Ads certifications, you need a score of 80% or higher within 75 minutes, and the certification stays valid for one year. Google itself recommends hands-on experience before the exam. The exam does not check whether your ads make money. For an owner, the Skillshop courses are more useful than the badge.

Can I learn Google Ads with ChatGPT alone?

It will help you understand a term or draft ad copy. But it cannot see your account, so check every tip against Google Help and your own numbers. If the AI’s advice and your account data disagree, trust the account.

Does a course guarantee leads?

No, and an honest course does not promise them. Results depend on the auction, the market, the website and the offer. What a course can promise is content: what you will learn, what you will change in your account, and where you can ask questions.

A paid Google Ads course pays off once you are already spending on ads.
