The auction decides where your ad appears, and leads depend on your market and your website too. What an honest contractor can guarantee is process: access to your account, a list of work, and a report. Check any promise against the table below.

Can anyone guarantee leads from Google Ads? No. No one can promise how many calls or form fills you will get: not a course, not an agency, and not me. The auction decides where your ad appears, and your leads also depend on your market and your website.

When a contractor writes «we guarantee leads,» what I see most often in audits is the same thing: they are managing the report, not the result. What can honestly be guaranteed is process: what was done, what was checked, what you can see in the account. Below is a table of promises and what to check, and a list of what to demand instead of a guarantee.

Why results in Google Ads cannot be guaranteed

If you are still deciding whether to pay for training, start with whether a Google Ads course is worth it. This article is about something else: how to read the word «guarantee» in someone’s proposal, whether it comes from a course or from a company that runs your ads.

Three things drive the result, and neither a teacher nor an agency controls any of them.

The auction. Every search is its own auction. A competing plumber or dental practice can raise bids, rewrite an ad, or increase budget, and your ad moves. You cannot see that in advance.

The market. Demand changes with the season, the news, and how customers feel. How many people search for your service this week is not decided by a course or a contractor.

Your website and your people. A click is not a lead. A lead happens on your site or on a phone call. Is the offer clear? Does the form work? Do you pick up the phone fast?

There is a flip side: a lot depends on how the account is set up. In the accounts I audited from 2023 to 2025, the median advertiser spent 39.4% of tracked search spend on search terms that did not produce a single lead. For a quarter of accounts, that share was above 67%. This describes advertisers who came for an audit, not the market norm. The conclusion is simple: an account can be improved, but the result cannot be promised.

What Google itself says about guarantees

In Google’s advertiser guide to working with third parties, the point is made directly: it is not possible to guarantee a specific ad position on Google.com search results pages. Ad position is determined by an auction and changes dynamically with every new search. Third parties that guarantee a specific position, such as the top position every time a user searches for your keyword, are misrepresenting how Google’s advertising works.

That page makes no promise about the number of leads. My reasoning is simple: if even a position cannot be promised, then leads, which depend on position, cost per click, and your website together, cannot be promised either.

The same guide gives two useful rules. First, you have the right to know at least the number of clicks, impressions, and the total cost of your ads. Second, take time each month to measure what you are investing and what you are getting back, such as how many new customers come in. And to confirm that a company belongs to a Google partner program, click the badge on its website: a certified company takes you to its profile page on Google.

What «guarantees» look like and what stands behind them

The wording varies. The table turns the most common phrases into questions you can ask in a minute.

What they promise

What may stand behind it

What to check

«We guarantee the top spot on Google»

Google says a specific position cannot be guaranteed: the auction determines it

Where it is written and how it is measured. Google lists this kind of promise as a warning sign

«We guarantee a set number of leads a month»

The definition of a lead was changed: any click on a button, a one-second call, searches for your own company name

What exactly counts as a lead. Send a test lead yourself and see whether it shows up in the report

«We will bring your optimization score to 100%»

The score rates the account setup, not leads. According to Google’s help page, it can reach 100% by applying or dismissing all recommendations

How many more leads you got, not how the score moved

«We are a Google Partner»

According to Google Ads Help, for the badge the agency’s manager account must keep a 90-day ad spend of $10,000 across managed accounts, and a minimum optimization score of 70%. That is a threshold for the agency

Click the badge on their site: it should open the company’s profile on Google. This checks status, it is not a promise about results in your account

«We will create the account on our side, you get access later»

Google names it a warning sign when a partner sets its own account requirements. The agency must set up a separate Google Ads account for your business

Whether you will be an admin of the account that spends your money, before work starts

«You do not need a report, the results will come»

The partner does not share cost and performance. Google tells advertisers to watch for this

A report with at least clicks, impressions, cost, and leads under an agreed definition

«Ads will lift your site in regular search»

Google says advertising has no impact on organic ranking: the two are completely separate

Do not buy a service on that promise

None of these phrases proves bad faith on its own. More often it is a mistake in how a lead is defined, or a wish to close the sale. But you can check each one without waiting a month.

A word on pay-per-lead pricing. It does not make a promise safer, because everything again comes down to the same definition of a lead. What counts as a lead, from which service area, and for which service should be written into the agreement before work starts, not worked out after the first invoice. Otherwise you will argue about words instead of customers.

A word on the badge and the score. The requirements for the Google Partner badge are described in Google Ads Help, and the optimization score is explained there as an estimate of how well the account is set up, from 0% to 100%. It is calculated in real time, and every recommendation you apply or dismiss changes it. The help page says plainly that the score can reach 100% by applying or dismissing all recommendations, so it can be raised without changing anything in the campaigns. It is a useful signal for a specialist, but it is not a report on how many customers you got, so ask a contractor for the list of changes applied and their effect on leads, not for the number. The Recommendations page does not predict whether your ads will do well either: it works from past data.

What to demand instead of a guarantee

Process is what can honestly be guaranteed. Here is what I would require from anyone who runs your ads, a freelancer or an agency.

Access. You are the admin of the account that spends your money, and the contractor works with an access level you granted and can take back. In Google Ads you can change a user’s access level or remove access at any time. Agencies often work through their own manager account (MCC), and that is normal. But according to Google, a manager account can be given ownership of a client account and manage user access, so check under «Access and security» which manager accounts are linked to yours. An admin of the account can unlink the manager account at any time. I covered how this works in the article on Google Ads and Analytics account ownership.

A definition of a lead. In writing: what counts as a lead (a call, a form, a message, a sale) and how it is measured. You send one test lead yourself.

A list of work with dates: what was set up, what was checked, what was changed, and why. For a sense of what a launch includes, see the checklist of what Google Ads setup includes.

A report: briefly each week at the start (spend, clicks, first leads), then a full one once a month. It has at least clicks, impressions, and cost, and next to them the leads under the agreed definition. The monthly rhythm fits Google’s advice to compare what you invest with what you get each month.

A written agreement with the agreed budget. Google advises you to keep an official copy of it.

If your ads already run and you cannot tell which of these five you have, my guide to how to audit a Google Ads campaign shows what to look at first.

Courses and guarantees

This applies to me too. The page for the Magic of Google 5.0 course says in its limits block that the course does not guarantee profit and does not fix a weak product, website, or business economics. It lists 9 modules, 1 year of access to the lessons, and question and answer sessions with me. That is a description of process, and you can check it before you pay: the program, the format, the access.

I do not promise leads, because they depend on how you apply the lessons on your own budget, in your own niche, with your own site. Read any other course the same way: what exactly you get, for how long, and whether it says what the course does not solve. A course that promises leads promises something the course does not control.

When this does not apply

The table is not about you if the promise concerns process and not results: a report on an agreed schedule, access, a list of work. Then the word «guarantee» is honest, and that is exactly what to demand.

It also does not replace a lawyer. If a contract is already signed, or you have specific clauses about terms and liability in front of you, read them with an attorney. I explain how to read marketing promises, not the terms of your contract.

One more limit. If your ads are not running yet and you have no website or phone line to send people to, the question is not a guarantee. It is what waits for the click after the ad. Fix that first.

Questions and answers

Can an agency guarantee the top spot on Google?

No. According to Google’s advertiser guide, an auction determines position and it changes with every search. A partner who promises the top position every time is misrepresenting how Google’s advertising works.

What should I do if I was already promised a set number of leads?

Ask for the definition of a lead in writing and send one test lead yourself. Make sure you are an admin of the account. Then each month compare what you invested with what you got: leads under that definition, not total clicks.

Does a Google Partner badge guarantee results in my account?

No. It is a threshold for the agency: $10,000 in ad spend over 90 days across managed accounts and an optimization score of at least 70%. Click the badge on the company’s site and check that it opens their profile on Google.

Does an optimization score of 100% mean the work is done?

No. According to Google’s help page, the score can reach 100% by applying or dismissing all recommendations, so the number alone does not prove work. Ask for a list of the changes applied and their effect on leads.

The step-by-step version of how I teach owners to run ads on their own budget is in my book on Google Ads for business owners.

No one can guarantee leads from Google Ads.
