Google gives no time frame for your first lead. First clicks are not leads, so spend the first two weeks confirming that leads are counted correctly, and draw conclusions after about a hundred clicks.

The short answer

There is no exact date for your first lead, and no honest contractor will give you one. There are steps where Google’s help pages do state the time: ad review usually takes one business day, and the Learning status of a bid strategy shows for up to seven days. After that, it depends on your budget, your niche, and your website.

First clicks are not leads, and first leads are not a steady flow. In the first two weeks the question is not profit but whether leads are counted correctly. Without measurement there is no «result» at all. If your ads are not built yet, start with how to set up Google Ads.

The steps from launch to leads

The table collects what the help pages state and marks the gaps where no time frame exists.

Step

How long it takes

What to check

Ad review

Usually one business day. According to Google’s help page, most ads are reviewed within one business day, though more complex reviews can take longer. While review is running, the ad status is «Under review.» You can see it in the «Status» column on the Ads page, under the Campaigns menu.

If an ad is under review for more than 2 full business days, check its status. If it is more than a week, contact Google Ads support. I cover what to do about a stuck review in the article on what the «Under review» status means.

Three practical points from the same page. Any edit to the ad or its assets restarts review and may delay it, so do not change anything while you wait. If an ad is «Eligible» but not running, first check that its campaign is not paused. If you are launching a new webpage at the same time, the page has to be complete for the ad to be reviewed. And remember that this is a review time, not a time to your first lead.

The «Learning» status

If your campaign runs on an automated bid strategy, its «Status» column may show «Learning.» It is triggered by structural changes: a new or reactivated strategy, campaigns, ad groups, or keywords added or removed, a significant change to the conversion goals or actions. Changes to budgets, numeric bidding targets (such as target ROAS), creatives, and targeting do not trigger it. According to the help page on Smart Bidding learning, the status can show for up to 7 days, and your ads run as normal the whole time. A portfolio strategy’s status is shown under «Bid strategies» in the Tools menu, and for a single campaign’s strategy look at the «Status» column of the Campaigns table.

«Learning» does not mean your ads have stopped. But performance may swing during these days, and the help page on bid strategy statuses says you may not want to measure performance until the learning period is over. The status disappearing also does not mean the strategy has reached its goal. Google says performance typically converges to a new goal within one to two conversion cycles. A conversion cycle is the time from a click to a lead, and it differs by business: a patient choosing a dentist decides differently than a homeowner with a burst pipe who needs a plumber today. Once the strategy has reached its goal, Google says to evaluate performance over two conversion cycles or a two-week window, whichever is longer, accounting for conversion delay: conversions often take several days to come in. So the latest days in a report may be incomplete, and that is no reason for sharp changes.

What Google advises for this period: one consistent conversion goal as the primary account default, enough daily budget, and no repeated target changes within one conversion cycle. There is more on the status itself in the article on the bid strategy Learning status.

First data: how many clicks you need for a decision

A lead happens after the click, so clicks arrive first and leads second. How many clicks do you need before you draw conclusions? Google’s help gives no click count; it measures by period: two conversion cycles or two weeks. This is my rule from practice, not a Google rule: with fewer than a hundred clicks in the campaign, it is too early to judge leads.

For scale: in its 2025 benchmarks, WordStream puts the median conversion rate in search advertising for US advertisers at 7.52%. That is roughly one lead per 13 clicks, or about seven to eight leads per hundred clicks. Your niche, your site, and your price will give a different number, and this is not a forecast. It only shows that a handful of clicks cannot support a conclusion.

That is why, in the first two weeks, one thing matters more than the lead count: whether measurement works. The same help page on bid strategy statuses explains that if relevant conversion actions are not set up, an automated strategy can set bids less accurately and you may get fewer conversions. Google separately names the case of missing conversion actions for phone calls. Without correct measurement there is no «result,» for you or for the algorithm.

Do not worry about an empty Recommendations page in the first days either. According to Google’s help, if your ads recently started running you might not find any recommendations: they appear once the account has some history.

If there are no leads after a month

A month without leads is a signal to inspect the account in a set order, not proof that ads do not work. Here is the order I use.

Are leads counted? Submit a test lead or place a test call yourself and see whether it reaches the report. If not, the problem is measurement, not advertising.

Are the ads running? Ads are «Eligible» and the campaign is not paused.

Are there clicks? If there are none, check the strategy status: «Limited» can come from search volume, bid limits, or budget. Very narrow targeting also slows the ramp-up.

Clicks but no leads. Then the question is not budget. First look at the searches that bring the clicks: if many come from people who do not need your service, the ads are buying the wrong people. Then check what waits after the click: the website, the form, the phone line. I put the breakdown in the article on clicks but no leads.

Did you change structure or goals too often? Each significant change can trigger «Learning» again.

What is the cycle in your business? If the time between a click and a lead is usually long, a month may be too short.

When this does not apply

The table does not promise dates: no row guarantees leads on a given day. It shows where time frames are known and where they are not.

The «Learning» status belongs to automated bid strategies. If you set bids manually, that section hardly concerns you.

I describe a standard search campaign. If you run a Smart campaign in Smart Mode, screens and statuses may look different. According to Google’s help, you can change to Expert Mode at any time, where other campaign types can be created.

The table also does not fit a long sales cycle. If a customer takes weeks to decide, as with a large remodel or a legal case, the first leads and conclusions move past my hundred-click rule of thumb. And if your budget brings only a few clicks a week, no conclusion is possible from that volume. Then you need a different plan first, not more waiting.

Questions and answers

How long does Google Ads ad review take?

Usually one business day, and some reviews take longer. After more than 2 full business days, check the ad status; after more than a week, contact Google Ads support. Any edit to the ad restarts review.

Does the «Learning» status mean my ads are not working?

No. The status shows for up to 7 days, and your ads run as normal the whole time. Performance may swing, so Google says you may not want to measure it until the learning period is over.

How many days until my first lead?

Google gives no such time frame, and I will not invent one. The known time frames: ad review usually takes one business day, and «Learning» lasts up to 7 days. A first lead is possible once your ad runs and someone clicks. But I judge ads by about a hundred clicks and working measurement, not by the first lead.

Can I edit my ad copy while the «Learning» status is active?

Editing creatives does not trigger the «Learning» status and does not remove your historical data. But new or edited ads go through review again and do not run until it finishes, so postpone edits you do not need.

The step-by-step version of how I teach owners to run ads on their own budget is in my book on Google Ads for business owners.

How long Google Ads takes to work: ad review, the Learning status and first data, step by step.
