Promotional credits are not refundable. For invalid clicks Google adjusts your bill, but it does not send cash back to your card.

Google Ads sends back to your card or bank account only the unused part of your own money. You can usually ask for it from inside an active account if your billing country is not on Google’s excluded list (the United States is not), you paid by credit card or bank transfer, and you carry no debt. Promotional credits and codes are not refundable. For invalid clicks, the remedy is a credit on your bill, not a refund.

How you fund an account and what to pay with is in my page on Google Ads payment methods. This page is only about getting money out. Google does not promise amounts or dates, its help gives estimates, and I present them that way.

What comes back, and how

Situation

What is returned

What to do

You have unused balance and your billing country is not on the excluded list

The unused balance. Bank transfer refunds are open to United States customers only. The excluded billing countries include Ukraine, Mexico, India, Brazil, and Argentina.

In the Billing menu, open Summary. Check the balance. On prepay, unused money shows as «Available funds». On postpay, it shows as «You have a credit». A debt appears under «Current balance».

Make sure you are an Admin or a Payments user on the payments profile. Without those permissions you will not see the refund option.

In the current month section, select «Request a refund». Google shows how much you can get back.

Pick the payment you want refunded to your card or bank account.

Track the status at the top of the Summary page: Requested, Approved, Sent. A request made from the Summary page cannot be canceled.

You have the right permissions but no refund option: that means there is nothing refundable right now. You meet every condition and still see nothing: contact Support, because the account may need a manual review. The final amount can be lower than your balance, since Google accounts for campaign costs that built up while the request was processed.

A refund by canceling the account, and the timing

Canceling the account starts a refund of the remaining balance to the original payment method. You still pay any accrued costs, and promotional credits are excluded. Where local payment methods were used in countries such as Ukraine or Mexico, Google asks for your bank account details first, and the help page gives about four weeks as the estimate.

The help pages give different timelines. Google processes a refund in about two weeks, and your bank or card company may need up to 10 more business days. The page on canceling an account says 4-12 weeks including the bank. By payment method the estimates are: credit card 2-3 weeks plus the card company’s time, bank transfer 3-4 weeks, SEPA direct debit 8 weeks. These are estimates, not a promise. Another help page says to contact Support if 4 weeks have passed since your request. So treat week 4 as the moment to check the status on the Summary page and write to Support, even when the range is longer.

If the card you paid with is closed, Google Ads prompts you to add a new active bank account, and the refund goes there. Sometimes you need to reactivate the account briefly to add a payment method and then cancel again. If the refund did not start by itself, look for a «Complete your refund» option in the account.

Invalid clicks: a credit instead of a refund

The Google help page on invalid traffic says there is no refund for it. If Google catches invalid clicks before billing, they are removed from what you owe. If it catches them later, you get a credit as a billing adjustment, and it shows up on later invoices and in your transactions. Open Summary in the Billing menu: on the month card, the Adjustments dropdown has a line named «Invalid activity». The Invalid Activity Credit Report, available for Search and Performance Max campaigns, shows the credited clicks and amounts.

If you suspect fraudulent clicks slipped past the filters, you can send an investigation request, but only for the last 60 days. Prepare your customer ID, exact dates, campaign names, suspect keywords, and server logs with IP addresses and Google click IDs. Google emails the findings, usually after several business days. For the clicks themselves, see my page on invalid clicks in Google Ads.

Mistakes business owners make

Waiting for cash on the card for invalid clicks. They are adjusted on the bill.

Looking for the refund option in an account whose billing country is on the excluded list. It will not be there.

Trying to file the request without Admin or Payments user rights.

Canceling without pausing campaigns first. Google advises pausing them to prevent further charges.

Counting on a refund of promotional credit. A credit can only be spent on ads.

When this does not apply

The active-account request is not available if your billing country is on the excluded list. It does not work while you carry an unpaid balance, because that has to be paid first. It does not cover promotional credits. Only unused funds are returned, not money that has already gone to clicks. And if you paid by bank transfer, the active-account request is open to United States customers only.

Questions and answers

Will I get money back for clicks I think are fraudulent?

Not to your card. Invalid clicks that Google catches are credited on your bill, and you can submit missed ones for review within the last 60 days. If Google finds more, it tells you about the credits.

Why was my refund smaller than my balance?

Google subtracts campaign costs that accrued while the request was processed. Promotional credit is not part of the refund either.

Can I cancel a refund request?

Not if you made it from the Summary page. If you canceled the account instead, you can cancel the request by reactivating the account, as long as Google has not yet sent you the confirmation email.

The owner who keeps billing and budget under control from day one needs refunds least. The step-by-step version is in my book on Google Ads for business owners.

Google refunds unused balance and credits invalid clicks as a billing adjustment.
