In the account this setting is called «Final URL expansion». Without exclusions it can send people to pages you never meant to advertise.

Final URL expansion lets Google replace the landing page you chose with a more relevant page from the same domain, based on what the person searched for. My rule is simple. If one page is the only path to a lead, turn it off. If your site has separate pages for separate services or products, leave it on, but exclude the pages that are not meant for ads.

The setting lives in two places. In Performance Max campaigns it is on by default. In Search campaigns it is part of AI Max and is also on by default when you turn AI Max on. For the campaign type itself, see the guide to Performance Max in Google Ads. This article is about one setting only.

Where it works and what it depends on

In Performance Max you turn it off by unchecking the box during setup or later in the campaign settings. It is not supported for Performance Max campaigns that run only for store goals, such as store visits, store sales, contacts, and direction clicks.

In Search it sits in the Asset optimization panel of the AI Max section, next to Text customization. It needs Text customization: if you turn that off, Final URL expansion is switched off automatically. Google notes that these features need conversion-based Smart Bidding to work effectively, and that manual CPC limits what AI Max can do. The help page also warns that starting in September 2026, campaigns using text customization are automatically upgraded to AI Max. I cover that change in the article on AI Max. It is worth opening the AI Max section in your own campaigns and checking.

Turn it on or off: a table by site type

The table is my practice, not a Google rule. The basis from Google’s help is in the last column. For service businesses there is also a separate guide to Performance Max for lead generation.

Your site

Decision and basis

What to exclude

One lead page or a quiz

Turn off. To exclude whole sections, use the Rules tab.

Select Apply, then Save. The steps are in Google’s help page on Final URL expansion in Performance Max.

In a Search campaign the path differs: Settings in the Campaigns menu, the campaign, then the AI Max section (the toggle must be on), and under «Final URL expansion» select Add URL exclusions. Exclusions work at the campaign level and need Text customization and Final URL turned on. Details are in the AI Max setup help page.

What breaks most often:

Excluding a home page that is also set as the Final URL. That does not work, because the Final URL still serves. Choose a more specific landing page, then exclude the home page.

Pasting an address with a trailing space or a hidden character. The exclusion will not apply.

Keeping a static address without
{lpurl}
in the tracking template, or using
{lpurl}
only as part of a parameter. People can be sent to that address or to a 404 page. The recommended forms are
{lpurl}?
,
{lpurl}&
, and
{lpurl}#
. Check this before you turn on AI Max.

Turning it on and never looking at where the traffic goes. In Performance Max, the «Expanded Final URL assets» tab in asset reporting shows the address, impressions, and conversions.

When this does not apply

For Performance Max campaigns that run only for store goals, Final URL expansion is not supported. In Search it switches off together with Text customization, and URL exclusions work only while AI Max, Text customization, and Final URL are all on.

With manual CPC, AI Max does not receive the signals it needs for its advanced optimizations. If you pin headlines and want them to always show, you will have to turn expansion off.

Questions and answers

Can I turn off Final URL expansion and keep text customization?

Yes. For one page that is your only path to a conversion, the Performance Max help page recommends exactly that, then checking the Final URL in the asset group. It does not work the other way around: turn text customization off in Search and expansion goes off with it.

Why does my home page still show after I excluded it?

Either it is set as the Final URL, or the campaign uses a Merchant Center feed, where the home page can show in some inventory even after you exclude it.

How long until a change takes effect?

In Performance Max, changes to these settings can take 24 to 48 hours to show fully.

The step-by-step version is in my book on Google Ads for business owners. It shows how to set up campaigns and pages so the ads lead where you intend.

Google can swap your landing page for another page on your site.
