After an edit Google re-reviews the ad; for an unverified number that usually takes 24-48 hours.

Google rejects a phone number in an ad under one of two policies. «Unverified phone number» means Google could not confirm the number on your website. «Unacceptable phone number» means the number itself is the problem: a fax, premium or vanity number, a number that is not local to the place you target, or one that does not connect to the business you advertise. You fix the first on your site and the second by replacing the number. After you edit, Google re-reviews the ad automatically. For an unverified number the help gives typically 24-48 hours.

Say you run a plumbing or HVAC company and your call button stops showing. Today a number goes into the ad as a call asset on a responsive search ad. Google’s help says that from February 2026 it removes every way to create new call ads, and that in February 2027 existing call ads stop receiving impressions. How call assets work and what replaced the old format is in my piece on call assets after call-only ads. This article covers only the rejection and the verification.

Which policy fired

Hover over the status of the disapproved ad or asset and an explanation appears. Google’s help describes the two policies on separate pages: unverified phone number and unacceptable phone number. The table puts them side by side. Under both, the number has to work in the country you target and relate to the company you advertise.

Policy

What it means

What to do

Unverified phone number

Google has not verified the number: it is not shown as text on the site in your ad, or a script swaps it

Show the number as text on a page of your own domain. If a script swaps it, verify the domain

Unacceptable phone number, number type

Fax, premium or vanity number, a number not local to the targeted location, a virtual or personal number, or a number that is inaccurate, inactive or not yours

Replace it with a working number that belongs to your business and works in the country you target

Unacceptable phone number, fraud

The number is linked to fraudulent activity or a history of policy violations

Replace the number. Be clear about partnerships and do not borrow another brand’s identity in a misleading way

A premium number is any number that charges extra to complete the call. Google’s examples are 1-900 numbers in the United States and 871 numbers in the United Kingdom. Shared cost numbers are allowed but show with a disclaimer that additional charges may apply. A vanity number spells a word with letters instead of showing all the digits, so the caller has to translate letters on the keypad. A number that is not local or domestic for the targeted location fails too: the help gives a German number in an ad that targets Canada. Google may also place short test calls to confirm a number is valid and relevant, and those calls may be recorded.

How to verify the number, step by step

These steps are for the «Unverified phone number» policy.

Show the number as plain text on the website your ad points to. A number that only appears in an image cannot be verified.

The verification page must be on the same domain as the ad’s display URL. If the number is used in ads for several websites, it has to appear on at least one page of each.

Put the number on a page that gets regular visits and write it in the page source in E.164 format: a plus sign, the country code, and digits with no spaces. Google’s example is +12345678900.

If a dynamic number insertion script or a third-party call tracking service changes the number on your site, Google’s scanner cannot match it against the source code, and E.164 will not fix that. Prove you own the domain instead. The recommended way is to link Google Search Console to Google Ads; the system can take up to 24 hours to detect a new link. The other way is to place the Google tag (gtag.js) directly in your site’s HTML. A tag deployed through Google Tag Manager cannot verify the domain.

Edit and save the ad or asset so Google reviews it again. Under Campaigns, open Ads, hover over the ad or asset, select Edit, then Save. Check the status on the «Ads & assets» page.

In a location asset, the number comes from Google Maps or your Business Profile. If the address comes from your Business Profile, edit it there and the change flows into Google Ads. If you typed the address in manually, select the pencil icon in Google Ads.

If you are sure you did not break a policy, appeal. For an unverified number you appeal directly from your Google Ads account. For an unacceptable number the help sends you to a separate appeal form. If you cannot or will not fix the ad, remove it so the account is not suspended later for repeated violations. Google warns you at least 7 days before it suspends an account for these violations.

The number is approved but you do not see it

That is not always a rejection. Here is what happens to an approved call asset.

Call assets do not appear with every impression. The auction algorithm decides whether to show them, so the number appears next to only a share of your impressions.

You may have scheduled the number to show only when your business can answer calls, under Advanced options.

With call reporting on, the ad can show a Google forwarding number instead of your own.

On a desktop, the ad shows a «Call us» button. The number and a QR code appear after the click.

You can add a call asset to a Display campaign, but it may not serve to users.

A number typed into the headline or description text may lead to disapproval. Use a call asset for it.

If a call should count as a lead, read about call conversions. Google’s help warns that counting call conversions might affect your bids if you use automated bidding.

When this does not apply

Verifying your site does not fix «Unacceptable phone number». A fax, premium or vanity number, a number that is not local to the targeted location, and a number tied to fraud will not pass no matter how often it appears on your site. Replace the number.

A number that appears only in an image, such as a banner, is not checked. You need text on the page.

For existing call ads, Google’s help urges you to migrate to call assets right away, because in February 2027 those ads stop receiving impressions.

Questions and answers

How long does the re-review take?

For an unverified number the help says typically 24-48 hours. For an unacceptable number it gives no time frame, so watch the status on the «Ads & assets» page. If you verified the domain, resubmit the ad after that: edit and save the existing asset or create a new one.

Can I use a toll-free number?

Yes. The call asset help lists toll-free, standard and mobile numbers. Shared cost and non-standard cost numbers are allowed too, but they show a disclaimer that additional charges may apply.

Can I hide the number after business hours?

Yes. Under Advanced options on the call asset, choose the days and hours it should show.

If the status does not clear and the ads are already spending money, the step-by-step version is in my book on Google Ads for business owners.

Google rejects a phone number in an ad under one of two policies.
