How to Pay for Google Ads: Payment Methods

In short: Pay via manual top-up or automatic billing; set country and currency carefully at account creation, and at scale 61% of lost impressions come from Ad Rank, not empty balance.

Let us discuss how you can pay for Google Ads. I will explain the nuances of paying for PPC advertising in Google and how to avoid unnecessary expenses in the form of taxes.

The wider context of the system is covered in Google Ads: The Complete 2026 Guide. It is also worth seeing what PPC advertising really costs. See also how account structure works.

In short: Google Ads payment is based on two logics: manual payments (you top up the balance first and impressions run as long as there is money) or automatic payments (ads run on credit and billing occurs after the fact upon reaching a threshold or once a month). This is configured in the billing section of the account: country, currency, payments profile, customer type (business or individual). The main pitfall is usually not in the payment itself but in the data: if the payments profile does not match the actual card or company details, Google holds the payment or blocks impressions until verified. The exact path in the interface may differ slightly from version to version, but the billing logic remains the same.

Update for July 2026: added a summary of Google Ads payment methods at the beginning, updated the wording about bids and responsive ads, and expanded the article with a FAQ and a practical What is Next section.

Steps to Pay for Google Ads

You can pay for advertising through your Google Ads account. To do this, go to the Billing and payments section and select the Summary item. Next, you need to fill in new billing details:

  • Country where you will fund your Google Ads for PPC advertising. The country determines the available Google Ads payment methods as well as the VAT rate charged to a business entity in accordance with tax laws.
  • Currency: if it was selected at the account level, it cannot be changed. If no currency was specified in the account, you can choose any. Recommendation: since the minimum bid and auction step in dollars are higher than in some other currencies, it is more profitable to specify your local currency for payment if applicable. This will help avoid extra advertising costs. When selecting a high rate currency (dollars, pounds sterling, euros), you will have to pay more for ads.
  • Payments profile is pulled automatically from Google. If it is not created, the system will prompt you to create a new payments profile.

1. Google Ads Payment Methods:

  • Manual payments mean that first you top up your Google Ads account by a certain amount (Google indicates the minimum in the tooltips). After that, ad impressions begin. This continues as long as there is money in your Google Ads balance. Once it is depleted, the ad impressions stop. As soon as you can fund the Google Ads balance, impressions will resume. This is the primary method for most advertisers. It is safe and controllable, so I recommend it to everyone who does not know how to fund a Google Ads account, especially at the initial stages of working with ads. Also note that it can take from 24 hours to 7 days between the moment of payment for Google Ads and the start of impressions. Therefore, it is better to plan your top ups so that impressions do not stop.
  • Automatic payments: Google shows ads on credit without any prepayments and then deducts the accumulated amount for impressions. Money is automatically deducted from the card to pay for Google Ads once a month or upon reaching a specific threshold. I do not recommend this Google Ads payment method because if you do not control this process, the system can charge several thousand dollars at once. This is convenient for large companies with a stable and large advertising budget.

The first payment amount, for example, $1000, if the manual payment method was selected.

📊 Data from practice: At a scale of $1M and above, the advertising budget almost never becomes a bottleneck for impressions. In audited accounts, campaigns lost up to 61% of their impression share due to Ad Rank (bid and Quality Score) and practically 0% due to lack of budget. If the account has already grown to a serious scale and impressions are lacking, the issue is usually not how much money to deposit into the account, but rather ad quality and bid size. 2. Payment Method:

  • A Visa or MasterCard bank card (debit or credit) is the most convenient option. You need to add bank card details (number, expiration date, CVC). The amount that will be deducted from the card is affected by the bank commission and the dollar exchange rate. After the card details are saved in the Google Ads system, topping up the account is even easier: just click Make a payment in the Summary and specify the amount.
  • Bank transfer is a Google Ads payment using payment systems, the list of which differs for different countries.

3. Customer Info

The next important point is to specify the account type:

  • For a business entity, all fields are filled in. Payment for Google Ads will be made from a checking account via a bank. In this case, an additional VAT tax at a rate of 20% of the advertising amount will be deducted monthly (for the UK, for example), for other countries the percentage may differ. Google will also send reports to your accounting department or email address, including invoices and other documents.
  • Individual account means no VAT is paid in some regions. Therefore, if you do not need reporting for the tax service, this path is more profitable. You need to fill in standard personal data:

* Full name;

* Address;

* Phone number.

At the end, click I agree to the terms and conditions and Submit.

Summary of Google Ads Payment Methods

Brief summary:

  • Use your local currency to avoid conversion fees;
  • Use the manual payments type;
  • Use the individual account type.

Pay attention to the currency you choose as a payment method when setting up your account. Since paying for PPC advertising in your local currency can be more profitable than in dollars, I advise choosing it. You will be able to set lower bids and pay less per click.

I recommend using manual payments as the payment type since it allows you to control your advertising payments.

If desired, you can make changes to the billing settings. The only thing you cannot change is the account type, so choose right away which one is better for your business, an individual or a business entity. For most entrepreneurs, it is better to register an individual account, as the cost of advertising will be lower by the VAT amount.

Frequently Asked Questions About Payments

Why did Google Ads charge more than my daily budget?

Google allows the daily budget to be exceeded on certain days, but balances impressions over the calendar month. The final charge for the month should not exceed roughly the daily budget multiplied by the average number of days in a month. If the amount is confusing, it is better to check the statistics for the entire month, not just for one day.

What to do if payment is declined in Google Ads?

Impressions stop until a successful payment. You should check the expiration date and card limit, check with your bank if it blocks payments in another currency or country, and try the payment again or link another payment method.

Do I have to pay VAT on Google Ads?

It depends on the country of registration of the payments profile and whether the account is registered to a business entity or an individual. It is better to check the exact rate and calculation procedure in the current billing settings of your account or with an accountant, as rules by country change over time.

Can I change the payment method after ads are running?

Yes, the country, currency (if it is not fixed at the account level), card, and payment type can usually be changed in the billing section at any time. The only thing that cannot be changed is the customer type after creating the account, so the choice between a business entity and an individual account is best made in advance.

Why is Google asking to verify my payment profile or holding my payment?

This usually happens when the payment profile details (name, address, company details) do not match the card or bank details. Until the discrepancy is resolved, the system can hold the payment or limit impressions. The solution is simple: update the profile data so that it matches exactly the official details of the payer.

What is Next?

Are they asking to pass advertiser verification? Sometimes the system requests identity or company verification separately from the payments profile. How to pass it without delays is analyzed in our guide on how to successfully pass Google advertiser verification.

Was your account suspended after payment? Suspension is not always directly related to payments. The main reasons are analyzed in our article on why Google suspends accounts.

Already suspended, what to do next? Step by step actions to restore access are collected in our guide on what to do if your account is suspended.

How to reduce the risk of suspension in advance? Prevention is usually easier than restoring access. Practical tips are collected in our article on how to avoid a ban in Google Ads.

Have not set up the campaign itself yet? Payment solves only part of the launch task. The full procedure for setting up an account and campaign is described in our article on how to set up Google Ads.

When this does not apply

  • Available payment methods depend on the country, currency, and payments profile, so there is no universal set.
  • The billing country and account currency usually cannot simply be changed after creating the account.
  • Successful funding does not guarantee impressions if the account is suspended, ads are disapproved, or the campaign is limited by settings.
