In short: you cancel a Google Ads account in its settings, and you need Admin access. Ads stop within 24 hours, unpaid costs still have to be paid, and unused funds go back to your original payment method. No money left in the account? Google suggests pausing your campaigns instead of canceling.

You can cancel a Google Ads account at any time. In the Admin menu open Account settings, expand Account status, and select “Cancel my account”. You need Admin access. Your ads stop within 24 hours. You still pay any accrued costs, and Google refunds the unused prepaid funds automatically.

To reach those settings you have to be signed in with the right access. I explain that in how to sign in to Google Ads. Before you cancel, decide whether a pause would do the job.

My rule of thumb: say you run an HVAC company and want to stop ads for a season, with no money left in the account. Pause. That is also what Google’s help page on canceling an account suggests. If you want your balance back, or you will truly never use the account again, cancel. If the problem is poor results, Google points you to optimization tips first.

How to cancel, step by step

  1. Pause your active campaigns. Google recommends this to prevent further charges.
  2. In the Billing menu, open Summary. Check the balance and any debt. If your billing setup is not finished, the help page says to finish it first.
  3. Confirm you are in the right account. If you have several payment profiles, check the profile too.
  4. Sign in with Admin access. Without it the cancel option will not appear.
  5. In Account settings, expand Account status and select “Cancel my account”.
  6. Follow the refund on the Billing Summary page.

Canceling a client account from a manager account? You need Admin access to the manager account and ownership of the client account. If your Admin user has left the company, give Google Ads support the customer ID, the login email, and the account billing information. Google Ad Grants participants must remove all campaigns first.

What happens to your money

Payment setupWhat happens after you cancel
PrepayNo unpaid balance. Remaining funds go back to the card or bank account you paid with.
PostpayUnpaid costs show under “Balance”. Your primary payment method is charged within 31 days.
Monthly invoicingUnpaid costs show under “Amount due”. To spot extra charges after ads stopped, open Transactions and look at “Campaign activity” lines.
Promotional creditNot refunded.

The final charge covers all costs your ads accrued before you canceled that you have not been billed for yet. If the card on file has expired, add a valid payment method or the final settlement will be delayed. Google’s typical refund timeline is 4-12 weeks including your bank, an estimate and not a promise. Another Google help page says to contact Support if 4 weeks have passed since your request. So treat week 4 as the moment to check the status on the Billing Summary page and write to Support, even if the typical range runs longer. I cover the conditions and a closed card in my page on Google Ads refunds. All of this is confirmed on the Google help page on billing after canceling.

What happens to your data and access

After you cancel you can still sign in and view your data, but after a long time access may be blocked. Remarketing lists, including Customer Match lists, are set to “Closed”. About a month later their membership duration drops to one day and the users are removed. Lists shared with other accounts become unusable for them, and dynamic remarketing parameters are deleted. A canceled account cannot be reached through the Google Ads API.

You can come back: an Admin selects “Reactivate my account”. You may be asked to verify payment details, and Google reviews documents within 48 hours. Campaigns that were active when you canceled start running again, and paused ones stay paused. If the account has no activity and serves no ads for 3 months after reactivation, it is canceled again. An account with no spend for more than 15 months is also canceled automatically.

Mistakes business owners make

  • Canceling without pausing campaigns or checking the balance first.
  • Believing that canceling wipes out the debt. You pay accrued costs anyway.
  • Canceling because results are weak. Google suggests looking at optimization first.
  • Not checking which account and payments profile they are working in.
  • Not exporting reports while access still exists.

When this does not apply

Without Admin access you will not see the cancel option. Canceling does not erase a debt and does not refund promotional credit. It is a poor substitute for a temporary pause, because reactivation may not be possible after a long time. A client account needs ownership, and Ad Grants participants have to remove campaigns first.

Questions and answers

Can I restore a canceled account?

Yes. Reactivation is free, but only for an Admin. If a long time has passed since you canceled, reactivation may not be possible.

Can Google cancel my account on its own?

Yes: for inactivity of more than 15 months with no spend, or for violations of advertising or billing policies. You learn about it from an email and an in-account notification.

How long does the refund take?

Google gives a typical range of 4-12 weeks including your bank. You can follow the status on the Billing Summary page. If 4 weeks have passed since the request, Google’s help says to contact Support, even if the range is not over.
