In short: making money with PPC is easier through a narrow niche and direct outreach than through freelance marketplaces. Choose a clear business segment, study its demand, websites and typical advertising mistakes, then find companies you can quickly show real value. The first income usually comes not from a nice resume but from a precise audit, a test launch and the ability to explain to a business owner where leads are being lost.

Earning from paid search is one of the more promising ways to make money online. I will walk you through 3 simple steps to find your first client, the kind who stays with you for a long time and keeps paying for ads. I will also cover 4 types of clients, where to find them and how to work with each.

The illusion of a market oversaturated with PPC specialists

If you are wondering how to make money with PPC, my first piece of advice is: do not be scared that the market is full of specialists. Most of them gather in one place, the freelance marketplaces. On those platforms there really are many freelancers for every client, all offering their services. Competition there is high, and without experience and client communication skills it is hard to land your first clients. Yet even with so many freelancers, clients themselves say it is hard to find someone who focuses on real help for the business and truly understands how to run ads that earn money.

Next I will show you where to look for potential clients when there are many of them and few ad specialists. That is where I recommend taking your first steps.

How to find a client for your PPC services

Three ways of earning that I separate

In paid search I separate income from a specialist’s service, the margin on your own product, and a measured spread between acquisition cost and the value of the result. Owning an ad account does not create a money model by itself: the account remains a tool.

To find a good client you need to take three steps. What a PPC specialist actually does is covered in What Is a PPC Specialist? The Role in 2026, and you can learn the official Google Ads product basics through the free Google Skillshop programs.

  1. Choose a few Google ad channels. For beginners I recommend starting with Search ads and remarketing on the Display Network. This type of advertising suits most kinds of business, while Performance Max and other automated formats are worth adding only when the economics of leads are clear and you have data to optimize. You need to understand what Search ads are, how they work and how to build a business on them. The same goes for remarketing on the Display Network: get familiar with it and learn how it works and what its quirks are.
  2. Choose a niche for earning from setting up and running PPC. It is very important not to do everything at once, but to position yourself in the job market as a specialist in a particular niche. Such a person earns more trust from clients. The difference is easy to feel if you imagine where someone with an earache wants to go: to a specialist ENT doctor, or to a generalist who promises to cure everything at once. Another example: a person with a premium car wants it serviced well at a repair shop. They are unlikely to choose a mechanic who fixes anything at all and has just finished working on an old budget car. The field can be anything: medicine, services, law. I even recommend choosing not just a field but a narrower sub-field. In medicine you can specialize in dentistry, psychiatry or consultations. Among services you can pick food delivery, event planning and so on. The narrower the field, the more thoroughly you can study it. It is important to learn which problems a business owner faces, how those problems can be solved and what competitors in the same niche do. It helps to look at their websites and note the strengths and weaknesses.
  3. Find a client in the chosen niche. Within 1-2 days of diving into the niche and preparing well, a beginner can appear before a client as someone who knows the trade. At this stage you can already talk confidently with a potential client and stress that you know how to solve the problems of that particular business. How much you manage to earn depends directly on this.

How to make money with Google ads depending on the type of client

The type of client determines how you earn

Broadly, the clients you can earn from as a PPC specialist fall into 4 types. The type decides where you look for a client, what you offer and how you build a long-term relationship. Let us go through each:

Four types of clients need different approaches

  1. People already use Google ads and are happy with the results. You can look for such clients in Google: type a query related to your chosen niche and see which companies already advertise their services in the results. The main tactic with these clients is to prove you can make their advertising better, more efficient and cheaper. For example, you can find irrelevant queries that this company’s ads show for. If someone is searching for a free service and Google shows them the company’s ad, that is wasted money that can be avoided. Once the owner gets a screenshot confirming the inefficient ad display and an offer to fix it, they will be interested in choosing you to manage their ads going forward.
  2. People who have tried PPC before, it did not help and they do not use it now. You will not find such clients in the ads when searching Google, but you can find them in website directories, in organic results and on forums. The tactic with them is to show in practice that PPC works and that their business comes out ahead. You can reach the client by email or phone and offer to set up ads for free for 1 week.
  3. People who have never used PPC but have their own website. For these clients it is enough to demonstrate clearly that ads work, so that they use your services for a long time. Your earnings from PPC and the length of the cooperation are directly linked. To prove that ads work, 1 week of free test mode with just 1-2 of the hottest keywords is usually enough. Setting up such ads takes minimal time, and the result can be a long and stable cooperation.
  4. People who have no website and do not use PPC. Many have no idea what PPC is or how much can be earned with it. Potentially any business can become your client if you find it, explain it properly and get the owner interested in the result. To find such clients, simply walk around your area and note which car repair shops, firms and stores are there. Then check whether they have a website. If not, offer to build one for a minimal fee and show the benefits in practice. Free website builders are enough for this. The hardest part is convincing the owner that the business needs a website and ads to grow effectively. If the owner sees how many new customers and how much profit the test-mode ads bring, they will most likely want to continue working with you, and for a long period.

Checklist for your first PPC income

  1. Choose one narrow niche where leads can be checked quickly: dentistry, home repair, delivery, legal services, a local service.
  2. Collect 10-20 companies from Google, Google Maps, directories and organic results, and mark separately those who already buy ads.
  3. Check the websites by hand: lead form, phone number, loading speed, clarity of the offer, prices or examples of work.
  4. Find 2-3 visible losses: an irrelevant query, a weak landing page, no remarketing, an unclear ad headline.
  5. Build your email or call around one problem, not around the phrase “I set up ads”.
  6. Offer a small test with a clear success measure: calls, leads, cost per contact, quality of queries.
  7. After the test, show the owner not the Google Ads interface but a business conclusion: what worked, what to switch off and where to put the next budget.

Conclusions about earning from ad setup

We have covered where to look for clients for PPC and how to earn from it. In closing, I want to encourage beginners not to go to a freelance marketplace for work. Competition there is heavy, and you need to know how to communicate with a client properly. It is better to take the first steps on your own: look for clients, email them, call them, offer your services. This path may look harder, but it opens up large prospects.

It is also important not to make a high price your priority at first. Focus on understanding in detail how advertising works, so that you can bring every client the maximum benefit. Do not chase the number of clients; improve the quality of your service. Then your clients will be loyal and grateful, and your reputation and experience as an ad specialist will grow. Your income from PPC will grow after that, and how much depends on you.

Still doubt whether you can make money with PPC? Simply act on my advice. How much you earn depends on your desire, experience and determination.
