The “Unverified” status means that the conversion tracking tag tied to this conversion action has not fired yet. In other words, the conversion is unconfirmed: Google has never seen the tag run. You will find it under Goals > Conversions > Summary, in the conversion actions table, in the “Tracking status” column. If you are still setting tracking up, start with the conversion tracking setup guide.
What it means
According to Google Ads Help, if you set the action up recently, this status can be expected. Until a visitor converts on your site, the tag has nothing to fire on, so just wait.
But if you get many conversions every hour (including unattributed ones), the status should update within 10 minutes. If that time has passed and the status is the same, there is a problem with your tag setup. Do not confuse it with “No recent conversions”: that is an action that has already been verified, but has recorded nothing lately.
What is at stake
While the status stays the same, the tag has recorded nothing for this action. Your ad clicks are still billed, yet the lead report is empty.
In my experience, the cause is usually simple: the tag sits on the wrong page. Not on the thank-you page the customer sees right after submitting a request. That is the first place I look.
What to do
- If the action is new, wait for someone to complete a conversion on your site.
- If you have waited long enough, hover over the status in the table and pick the first option in the pop-up, the one that starts the guided test, then select “Continue”. Tag Assistant opens in a new window.
- Enter the URL of your landing page or home page, not the conversion page, and select “Connect”. Then complete the conversion yourself, for example by submitting your quote form. Select “Finish”, then “Close Tag Assistant”. About 30 minutes later your account updates: the action shows “no recent conversions”, then “Recording” after the first real conversion.
- If you use Google Tag Manager, you may need to enable your container for debugging: in the Tag Assistant window, select “Debug live version”.
- Check your thank-you page: open it, view the page code (in Chrome, right-click the page), and look for a comment starting “Event snippet for” followed by your action name. If it is missing, the tag has to be added.
- Rule out common code errors: a currency symbol or commas in the value, a send_to value that differs from your account, or curly quotation marks.
What not to do
- Do not click your own ad to wake the status up. Google points to other ways first, because that is a real click and you pay for it. Use Tag Assistant first.
- Do not test by going straight to the thank-you page or through Tag Manager preview mode. Those test conversions may not show up in Google Ads.
- Do not delete the action and create a new one. The conversion ID and label in the tag request must match the action, otherwise the tag is tied to a different action. A new action has new values, while the tag on your site keeps the old ones.
What I see in audits
In about two in three of the accounts I review, an action is marked primary while no campaign goal bids on it. In four out of five accounts that feed leads into bidding, at least one lead action counts every conversion instead of one per click (a snapshot of settings from 2026). So even after the tag passes, the action status is only the first check. Then I open the conversion actions table and look at what actually lands in the “Conversions” column.
When this does not apply
- The action was created recently and no conversion has happened yet. The status is expected, not an error, so waiting is enough.
- Your account has moved to conversion tracking in a manager account. Then, in the managed accounts, actions stop tracking new clicks regardless of the tag status, and conversions are tracked only in the manager account.
- You are looking for something else, such as “Awaiting conversions”. That is a separate topic, covered in the guide to awaiting conversions.
I put the conversion tracking checks I run on every account, together with the rest of my system, into a short e-book.

How soon will the status update?
With many conversions every hour, within 10 minutes. After a Tag Assistant session, about 30 minutes. Reporting in general can lag by 3 to 24 hours.
How is “Unverified” different from “Tag inactive”?
With “Unverified” the tag has not fired even once. With “Tag inactive” there were no conversions from ad clicks in the last 7 to 14 days. You can run Tag Assistant for both, and for “Needs attention” as well.
Do I need a developer?
If you cannot find the tag, or it has to be added or fixed, yes. Google says to contact your web developer.
