Google Business Profile verification is how you become the owner of the profile. You need a Google Account to manage it.
Google chooses the methods. They depend on the business type, public information, region, or hours, and you may need more than one. If video is offered, start there. Set the profile up first in Google Business Profile setup. The steps are in the verification help.
Why verify the profile
Until the profile is verified, you cannot edit the business name or hours, and you cannot interact with customers through it. Verification makes you the owner and lets you keep the information accurate. Performance data is available only for verified Business Profiles. If an agency helps you manage the profile, you can add it after verification.
Which methods Google offers
The screen shows only the methods Google already picked. If Postcard or Live video call is missing, you cannot turn it on.
| Method | When Google offers it | What to have ready |
|---|---|---|
| Phone or text | When it is on the screen. Get verified, then Phone or SMS. | A number that takes a call or a text. Interactive Voice Response will not get the code. |
| When it is on the screen. Get verified, then Email. | The address shown on the verification screen. | |
| Live video call | Not for every business. Only during the business hours of your location. | Be on site with signs and staff-only access. Start call is a text chat with support, then video. |
| Postcard | Not for every business. Postcard after Get verified. | A correct mailing address. Do not edit the name, address, or category while you wait. |
| Business video | Recommended when you qualify: storefront, service area, or hybrid. | One live phone take of at least 30 seconds, with no edits and no other faces. |
Video: what the recording must show
A plumber who films the van and skips the street will still fail. On audits I check three frames in the footage: the name on a fixed sign matches the profile, a street sign or landmark is in the shot, and someone does a task only staff can do. The rules are in the video verification help.
Plan the recording before you film. It is one live take, unedited, with no breaks, at least 30 seconds, shot and uploaded from a phone through the profile. A storefront should plan the route too and walk it in one take: street, sign, staff-only action. A service-area business films something different, covered below. Do not upload a file you recorded earlier. Keep bank, tax, and ID numbers, private details, and other people’s faces out of the frame.
A storefront business meets people in person during stated hours at a place with a permanent sign. A dentist with a fixed sign on the door fits. A hybrid also visits or delivers. The help page uses a restaurant with a dining room and delivery. No permanent sign means a service-area business, not a storefront.
- Location: street signs, building numbers, nearby businesses, or familiar places. That checks the pin on Maps.
- The business exists: storefront, showroom, or sign. The name is printed on a signboard, wall, or window and matches the profile.
- You manage it: open the cash register, log into the point-of-sale system, or enter the kitchen or storage.
A locksmith, a plumber, or an HVAC company that only visits homes does not serve people at its address, so the address stays hidden from customers. Film street signs or neighborhood landmarks, not an empty lot. Show tools, the workspace, or branded clothing. Then do the job, unlock a branded van, or hold a permit, invoice, or utility bill with the profile name. Cover account numbers.
- On the phone, open the profile and tap Get verified. Enter a number if asked, then Next.
- Tap Business video, then Next. Allow location, camera, and microphone if asked.
- Tap Next, then Start recording. Use Try again if needed, then Upload video.
How long it takes and what the notices mean
Review takes up to 5 business days, and on rare occasions longer. It can be instant if the website is verified in Google Search Console, or if you use bulk verification. While the review runs, I do not open a duplicate profile and I do not change details without a reason, because Google may ask for more details after a recent edit.
Most codes arrive within 14 days. Enter the 5-digit code in Code and tap Submit. The code expires after 30 days, and a new request cancels the old code. Google never asks for the code. Do not share it, even with whoever manages the profile. While the card is in the mail, I tell owners not to edit the name, address, or category.
Video review also takes up to 5 business days. The two results are Successful and Not successful. Delete the file any time: on your phone open the profile, tap More at the top right, then Business Profile settings, Advanced settings, Video uploads, Delete videos. If you leave it, Google deletes it later. A cancelled upload disappears for you and for Google.
If verification does not go through
If Get verified returns, Google could not finish. Try again or use another method on the screen. Do not create a second profile for the same location: a duplicate breaks how Maps and Search display it. Another location with its own staff gets its own profile. That rule is in the guidelines for representing your business.
A Review issues notice after a video means the recording was not accepted. The new video must repeat the first one and add the missing proof. The help lists typical gaps: the name is not visible on the storefront, no nearby places are shown, or there is no proof you can manage the company. If the upload fails the first time, retry it from the profile. That does not allow an old file: the recording has to be live. Use another method on the screen before you contact support.
A request for more details often follows a recent edit. Select Get verified and use the method on the screen. A suspended profile is covered in Google Business Profile suspended.
Owner mistakes that slow or break verification
- Editing the name, address, or category while the postcard is in the mail. The code will not work.
- Requesting a second code. The first code is cancelled.
- Giving the code to an agency or to someone who claims to be from Google.
- A clean shot with no sign, no street, and no staff-only action, or with a customer’s face in frame.
- Calling a business with no permanent sign a storefront, or showing a plumber’s home address.
A service-area business hides its address from customers by clearing it from the profile. The boundary should not extend farther than about 2 hours of driving time from where the business is based. Some businesses may use a larger area. See the service-area help. The report after verification is in the Business Profile performance report.

An online-only shop with a virtual storefront and no in-person service cannot create a profile or be verified. A locksmith or plumber who visits customers is outside that rule. They record the area, the tools, and a document.
You cannot turn on a method that is not on the screen. Postcard and Live video call are not offered to everyone, and a live call outside the business hours of your location will not start. A rented mailing address where you do not operate, known as a virtual office, is not eligible for a profile. A co-working office qualifies only with clear signage and your own staff receiving customers during business hours. A business that sells alcohol or other age-restricted products cannot operate as a service-area business without a storefront.
Questions and answers
Can I choose the postcard myself?
No. Google builds the list. Use what is on the screen. If several methods are offered, try another one.
The video is sharp. Why was it refused?
The help requirements cover what is in the frame and how it is recorded: live, in one take, at least 30 seconds. They set no bar for picture polish. The frames need the location, proof the business exists, and an action or document that shows you manage it. A new recording repeats the old one and adds the missing proof.
How long does the postcard take, and should I request another code?
Most codes arrive within 14 days and last 30 days. A second request cancels the first. Do not edit the name, address, or category before the card arrives.
